The wine that
taught me
patience

A column on drinking windows, storage, and the art of knowing when.

By Carson Smith · WSET-3 · CMS Intro · 450-bottle cellar

There is a moment, somewhere between the day you buy a serious bottle and the night you finally open it, when you stop thinking about price and start thinking about timing.

Cellared was built for that moment. Not the buying. Not the storing. The opening: the decision that has no good market signal. A 95-point score from 2018 tells you nothing about whether to drink the bottle tonight or in 2030.

Inside the app

Built to be opened,
not managed

The screens you live in: a daily pour, a sommelier that reads your whole cellar before it answers, and the collection itself.

01Sommelier

Tell it the occasion. It ranks what to open from the bottles you already own.

How It Works

Bring your cellar
into the app

01

Add Your Bottles

Cellared imports CellarTracker exports (old and new formats), Vivino exports, and generic CSV/XLSX files with column mapping. Or search our wine database or add manually.

02

Get Personalized Insights

Cellared calculates drinking windows, builds taste profiles, and maps your collection across varietals, regions, and vintages.

03

Drink Smarter

Ask the sommelier, run Quick Pick, or, if you enable alerts, see which bottles are entering their peak.

Who Built This

Carson Smith

A wine collector with WSET Level 3 and Court of Master Sommeliers Introductory certifications, who got tired of spreadsheets and generic apps that couldn't tell him when to open his best bottles. So he built Cellared.

450+Bottle Cellar
A note on the name

Cellared is a new iOS app, launched May 1, 2026. It is a different product from the older, similarly named wine tools. Read the founder story at the founder story.

Common Questions

The honest answers

What does Cellared cost?

Free with unlimited bottles, no credit card. Pro is $7.99 per month or $79 per year. Collector is $15.99 per month or $149 per year. You can run the entire app on the free tier indefinitely; the paid tiers add cellar-aware sommelier reasoning, personalized drinking windows, and reporting.

Does Cellared import from CellarTracker?

Cellared imports CellarTracker exports (old and new formats), Vivino exports, and generic CSV/XLSX files with column mapping. Import typically completes within a few minutes, in the app.

How do drinking windows work?

Every bottle can receive a drinking window calculated from up to ten scored inputs: tannin and structure, acidity, grape variety, price tier, region, alcohol balance, wine type, body and extract, storage condition, and bottle format. The window has four points: window open, peak start, peak end, and hard decline. Missing inputs remain unscored, so the app does not invent a plausible detail to complete the calculation.

Is Cellared iPhone only?

Cellared is available on iOS through the App Store. It is designed for one-handed use while you are looking at racks. The Android availability form is below.

Do I need to pay to try it?

No. Download the app, add bottles, and use the full free tier with no card. You can decide whether the paid features are worth it after you have lived with the app for a few weeks.

How is this different from CellarTracker or Vivino?

CellarTracker is a long-running web app and community database. Cellared is mobile-first with calculated drinking windows on every bottle and a sommelier that reads your full cellar before answering. Vivino is built for discovery and ratings. Cellared is built for managing the wines you already own. Read our CellarTracker, Vivino, and InVintory comparisons for the details.

What happens if I cancel a paid tier?

You can cancel anytime through the App Store subscriptions screen. After cancellation, Pro access continues through the end of the paid period, and your cellar data is retained either way.

That bottle won't wait forever.

Free. Unlimited bottles. No credit card.
