Drinking Window
In 2026: At PeakIn the heart of its drinking window (2025-2029).
Right now: By May 2026, the 2019 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino is entering the core of its drinking window, which opened in 2023, and is in an excellent phase of development. The concentrated dark fruit is fully expressive, the tannins are integrating smoothly, and the mineral and saline complexity that makes this wine exceptional is beginning to assert itself with increasing clarity. Peak drinking runs from 2025 through 2029, making 2026 an ideal moment to open a bottle and experience the wine at or very near its finest expression. After 2029, the wine will begin a gradual decline toward its hard limit in 2034. Open this wine in the next one to three years for the most complete experience.
Tasting Note
Catena Zapata's Malbec Argentino is a wine that marks a defining moment in the family's exploration of their homeland's greatest variety. Made from century-old ungrafted vines in the Lunlunta and Paraje Altamira subzones of Mendoza, the 2019 vintage yielded a wine of extraordinary precision and depth from one of the greatest recent growing seasons in Argentine wine history. The wine pours a saturated, inky dark violet with a nose that is immediately dramatic and complex: cassis and fresh blueberry lead with energy and focus, followed by violet florals and deep mineral soil tones that speak directly to the old vine parcels' connection to the ancient alluvia of the Andean foothills. The palate is dense and structured yet lively, with a lightly saline mocha quality threading through dark berry and warm spice, creating a wine that is simultaneously powerful and precise. The finish is palate-coating, long, and built on a surge of sweet black and blue fruits that fade cleanly with a mineral persistence. The old vines amplify everything: the depth of fruit, the complexity of the mineral expression, and the natural balance that younger vine Malbec can rarely achieve. A wine that confirms Catena Zapata's position at the absolute summit of Argentine winemaking and 2019 as one of the definitive expressions of what Mendoza Malbec can become.
About Catena Zapata
Catena Zapata is Argentina's preeminent wine estate, founded by Nicolas Catena Zapata, who introduced high-altitude viticulture to Mendoza in the 1990s and transformed the global perception of Argentine wine. The family estate farms vineyards from 900 to 1,450 meters above sea level in Lujan de Cuyo, Gualtallary, and other Mendoza subzones, with the oldest ungrafted Malbec plantings dating to the late nineteenth century. The Malbec Argentino is the estate's homage to these ancient vines, sourced exclusively from parcels over one hundred years old and made with the precision and detail that Catena Zapata applies to its entire premium portfolio.
Food Pairings
Argentine asado with short ribs and chimichurri
The wine's density, dark fruit character, and warm spice are the natural counterpart to grilled and smoke-kissed beef preparations in the Argentine tradition. Chimichurri's herbal brightness cuts through both the meat and the wine's richness pleasantly.
Braised short rib with roasted bone marrow and horseradish gremolata
The wine's plush, palate-coating fruit and firm tannin structure are well-matched to the richness of slowly braised beef with marrow, while the horseradish adds a sharp cleansing note.
Aged Manchego with quince paste and Marcona almonds
The wine's dark berry depth and mineral salinity find an ideal counterpoint in aged sheep's milk cheese with the sweetness of quince, a pairing from the Spanish tradition that translates naturally to Malbec.

Frequently Asked
Why are century-old ungrafted vines significant?
Phylloxera, the vine louse that devastated European vineyards in the late 19th century, was less destructive in Argentina due to the sandy soils of Mendoza's alluvial terraces. This allowed many vineyards to survive ungrafted on their original roots. Old, ungrafted vines produce smaller yields of more concentrated and complex fruit, with a root depth and vigor that gives the wine a mineral connection to the soil that younger, grafted vines cannot replicate.
Is 2019 Malbec Argentino ready to drink?
Yes. The window opened in 2023 and the wine is in excellent form in 2026. Drink now through 2029 for the best experience.
How does Malbec Argentino differ from Catena Zapata's other Malbecs?
Malbec Argentino is exclusively sourced from vines over 100 years old, a significant constraint that limits production and concentrates quality. The resulting wine shows a depth and mineral complexity that the estate's other Malbec offerings, which draw from younger vines, cannot fully replicate.
