Drinking Window
In 2026: Approaching PeakDrinkable, but best years are ahead. Peak begins 2028.
Right now: The Colgin 2015 IX Estate Red has been in its drinking window since 2022 and in May 2026 sits at the beginning of what the projected peak from 2028 to 2045 promises will be a very long and rewarding maturation arc. At eleven years old, the wine is showing the first serious development of tertiary complexity alongside still-vibrant primary fruit: the black cherry and cassis remain prominent, but cedar box, dried tobacco, and a deepening of the volcanic iron minerality are beginning to emerge in the bouquet. The dense, finely grained tannins are softening into something magnificent, and the finish remains the wine's most striking feature at over two minutes in length. Those opening the IX Estate now should give it at least two hours in a wide decanter, but the most complete expression of this wine is still a few years away as it rounds into the peak window beginning in 2028.
Tasting Note
Colgin's 2015 IX Estate Red pours a vivid, deeply saturated ruby-purple of extraordinary depth, the color alone conveying the volcanic hillside terroir of the IX Estate and the generosity of one of Napa Valley's most celebrated vintages. From the very first swirl, the glass cascades with aromatic complexity: black cherry, cassis, and crushed violet lead the charge, followed by a richly layered sequence of dark chocolate, iron filings, and roasted espresso that constitute the IX Estate's volcanic soil minerality in full expression. This is a wine that announces itself with authority. On the palate, the IX Estate is seamlessly structured: the tannins are dense and finely grained, building through a midpalate of exceptional concentration before driving through a finish that exceeds two minutes in the glass. The volcanic-soil minerality is amplified by the vintage's superb ripeness into something that feels simultaneously like great Napa Cabernet and something more mineral, more European in its precision. A wine of outstanding complexity and aging potential.
About Colgin
Colgin Cellars, founded by Ann Colgin and Joe Wender in the 1990s, has established the IX Estate on Pritchard Hill as one of Napa Valley's most coveted and influential hillside sites. The estate's volcanic soils and high elevation produce Cabernet-based wines of extraordinary mineral complexity and structural precision that are consistently cited among California's finest. The IX Estate designation reflects the vineyard's specific combination of Pritchard Hill elevation, volcanic ash and rock soils, and a Bordeaux-inspired blend philosophy that allows the terroir's character to dominate over varietal or winemaking statements.
Food Pairings
Wagyu beef tenderloin with roasted bone marrow and iron-rich jus
The IX Estate's volcanic iron minerality finds its culinary mirror in high-quality beef cooked simply, where the marrow's richness softens the tannin density and the iron jus amplifies the wine's mineral finish.
Lamb rack with black olive tapenade and roasted garlic confit
The lamb's fat and herbal character complement the IX Estate's cassis and dark chocolate register, while the olive tapenade resonates with the wine's volcanic terroir complexity.
Braised oxtail with truffle-enriched celery root puree
The collagen-rich oxtail braise provides the structural anchor this serious Cabernet blend requires, and the truffle amplifies the IX Estate's characteristic roasted espresso and iron complexity.

Frequently Asked
What grapes are in the Colgin IX Estate Red?
The IX Estate is a Bordeaux-inspired blend anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon, typically with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot completing the composition. The exact blend varies by vintage according to what the site produces.
Is the 2015 IX Estate ready to drink?
It is accessible now with two hours of decanting and showing very well at eleven years old. However, the peak window runs from 2028 to 2045, suggesting the wine is still building toward its finest expression.
What is special about Pritchard Hill as a wine-growing site?
Pritchard Hill on the eastern side of Napa Valley is among the most celebrated hillside wine-growing sites in California, combining volcanic soils with high elevation and naturally low yields to produce wines of rare mineral complexity and structural precision that distinguish them from valley-floor Napa Cabernets.
How long can the 2015 IX Estate age?
The hard decline is projected around 2055, giving this wine a potential lifespan of forty years from vintage. The volcanic-soil structure and high-quality vintage material suggest this is a conservative estimate for the best-stored bottles.
