Approaching Peak: drinkable, but best years are ahead.
As of 2026 this wine is at the very start of its drinking window, which opens in 2026 but sits firmly pre-peak. With tannin at 8 and a full-bodied frame (body 9) braced by moderate acidity (5), the structure is still tightly wound and the fruit has years of evolution ahead. The peak plateau runs from 2028 through 2049, with hard decline arriving around 2058. Opening a bottle now is possible with a long decant, but the wine is built to hold; the substantial, polished tannins are far better served by another two years minimum in the cellar before you truly catch it stretching out.
The ‘21 Red.
The 2021 Harlan Estate Red is a cooler-toned, powerfully structured Napa Cabernet from the western hills above Oakville, built to hold and reward patient cellaring.

Tasting note
A beautifully constructed, freshly vibrant expression from a cooler-toned vintage. The nose leads with violet and dark cherry, then layers of pencil shavings, iron filings, and earthy loam that signal hillside, gravelly-soiled fruit. On the palate it is medium-full bodied and tensile, the body 9 frame carrying cassis and raspberry alongside dried herb, tobacco, and a gravelly mineral streak. Moderate acidity (5) keeps everything lifted and precise rather than heavy, while the tannins, rated 8, are substantial but polished, gripping the structured finish without drying it. This is a wine of tension and line rather than sheer weight, and that interplay of firm tannin, fresh acid, and concentrated fruit is exactly what positions it for long, slow evolution in the cellar. The length is considerable, closing on iron, dark fruit, and fine-grained grip.
The 2021 vintage
The 2021 Napa Valley growing season followed rain only in January and February, then ran dry under drought conditions. Budbreak came early in April, and summer delivered early, even ripening with no concerning heat spikes, including a cool, even August. Those conditions naturally thinned an already low crop, leaving small-sized berries and clusters with thick skins that concentrated color, flavor, and tannin while preserving freshness. The result is a vintage of precise, vibrant, powerfully fruited wines, and Wine Spectator rated Napa Cabernet 97 and Classic, calling for cellaring.
About Harlan Estate
Harlan Estate is H. William (Bill) Harlan's hillside estate set in the western hills above Oakville, two steep ridge lines in the shadow of the Mayacamas. Bob Levy is the founding winemaker, with Cory Empting as winemaker, a partnership that has long shaped the estate's house style: tensile, structured Cabernet drawn from gravelly hillside fruit and built for decades of evolution. The 2021 carries that signature of fine-grained grip and freshness.
From the cellar: pair with
Dry-aged ribeye with a peppercorn crust
The marbled richness and charred crust meet this wine's firm tannin (8) head on, with the protein and fat softening the substantial grip while the full body (9) matches the steak's weight without being overwhelmed.
Braised short rib with root vegetables
Slow-braised collagen and savory depth echo the wine's tobacco and loam notes, and the moderate acidity (5) cuts through the unctuous sauce while the body (9) stands up to the dish's intensity.
Aged hard cheeses such as Comte or a sharp Cheddar
The salt and concentrated umami tame the polished but substantial tannins (8), and the wine's fresh acidity (5) keeps the pairing lively rather than heavy against the dense, full-bodied frame.
Service & cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 60-64F (16-18C)
- Decanting
- Decant 2 to 3 hours ahead. With tannin at 8 and a body-9 frame, this young, pre-peak wine needs extended air to unwind its substantial structure and let the violet, cassis, and mineral notes open; a longer decant softens the grip without losing the cooler-toned freshness.
- Cellar Storage
- 55F (13C), 60-70% humidity, bottle on its side.
The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked
When should I drink the 2021 Harlan Estate Red?
The drinking window opens in 2026, but in 2026 the wine is pre-peak and built to hold. Its peak plateau runs 2028 to 2049, with hard decline near 2058, so for the best experience hold it until at least 2028 and ideally well into the 2030s.
Should I decant this wine?
Yes. Decant for 2 to 3 hours. With tannin rated 8 and a full body (9), this young, pre-peak wine is tightly wound, and extended air is needed to soften the substantial grip and coax out the violet, cassis, and gravelly mineral aromatics.
What food pairs best with the 2021 Harlan Estate Red?
Reach for rich, savory dishes: dry-aged ribeye, braised short rib, or aged hard cheeses. The firm tannin (8) and full body (9) need fat and protein to balance them, while the moderate acidity (5) cuts richness and keeps the pairing fresh.
How long can I cellar the 2021 Harlan Estate Red?
This wine is built for the long haul. Stored at 55F with 60-70 percent humidity and the bottle on its side, it should hold and improve from 2028 through 2049, with hard decline arriving around 2058. The substantial, polished tannins and moderate acidity give it decades of evolution.
