Drinking Window
In 2026: Approaching PeakDrinkable, but best years are ahead. Peak begins 2027.
Right now: In 2026 the wine is just inside its peak window. The polished fruit and softening tannins are well-balanced, and the secondary notes — cocoa, cedar, warm spice — are beginning to emerge. Decant 60-90 minutes for best current expression. There are 8+ years of peak ahead.
Tasting Note
Deep ruby-purple, opaque core. The nose lifts with black currant, dark plum, and a polished cedar-and-cocoa edge from the all-new French oak. The palate is full-bodied with smooth, integrated tannins (5-6/10) and balanced acidity. Cassis, black cherry, and a touch of warm baking spice run through the mid-palate. The finish is long, polished, and finishes on a note of dark chocolate and a subtle herbal undertow.
The 2018 Vintage
2018 in Napa Valley was widely regarded as a near-textbook vintage: a long, even growing season produced wines of classical proportion with bright acidity and structured tannins. Top estates released wines from 2018 with strong aging potential.
About Joseph Phelps
Joseph Phelps Insignia is a Napa Valley founding icon, first produced in 1974 and considered one of the original California proprietary blends. The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend sourced from estate vineyards across multiple Napa appellations and aged extensively in new French oak.
Food Pairings
Dry-aged bone-in ribeye with herb butter
The wine's polished fruit and structure meet the steak's char and richness directly; the herb butter softens the firm tannins.
Braised lamb shoulder with pomegranate molasses
Long-cooked lamb's depth and the sweet-tart pomegranate align with the wine's dark fruit and savory edge.
Aged Manchego with quince paste
The cheese's saline richness echoes the wine's structure, and the quince brings out the dark fruit and cocoa notes.

Frequently Asked
Is 2018 Joseph Phelps Insignia ready to drink?
Yes. The wine entered its peak window in 2027 and is showing beautifully in 2026 with proper decanting. It will continue to drink well through approximately 2034.
How long will 2018 Insignia age?
Top Napa Bordeaux blends from a structured vintage like 2018 routinely age 18-22 years. Expect peak expression between 2027 and 2034, with graceful decline through 2040.
Should I decant 2018 Insignia?
Yes. 60-90 minutes in 2026. The wine is approachable but rewards air to show its full complexity. By 2030, 30-45 minutes will be enough.
What makes Insignia different from a single-vineyard Napa Cab?
Insignia is a multi-vineyard Bordeaux blend (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of other Bordeaux varieties) sourced from estate sites across Napa Valley. The blending approach gives the wine more complexity than a typical single-vineyard bottling at the cost of specific terroir expression.
