Peak 2023-2041

Where it is, November 2026

At Peak: inside the peak window (2023-2041), within the full drinking arc.

In 2026, this 2014 Grand Vin is at peak, sitting inside the 2023-2041 window this bottling carries. Twelve years on, the firm tannins built into this 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot blend have had time to resolve without softening the wine's full, powerful body, so it drinks as concentrated rather than faded. The cedar and blackberry core is joined by pencil lead and spice on the finish, both hallmarks of fully resolved Napa Cabernet rather than a wine still working through its structure. There's no reason to wait on this bottle.

Tasting note

Extremely floral for the variety, the nose carries cedar, blackberries and blueberries over a base of tobacco and minerality. On the palate, firm tannins frame cassis and pencil lead, with spice and chocolate extending into a long finish. Unlike a softer Merlot-heavy blend, this bottling leans almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon (95%, with 5% Merlot rounding the edges), and that shows in the wine's density: it's full-bodied at the very top of the range for the variety, with structure still firmly present even at peak maturity rather than having melted away.

The 2014 vintage

2014 was a drought year saved by well-timed rain. Heavy rain in late February and early March gave Napa's vines an early boost, not enough to break the drought but enough to push budbreak and harvest earlier than usual; some winemakers called it the earliest harvest on record. Wine Spectator's vintage chart scores 2014 at 95 points and calls it a beautiful vintage with a distinct signature, citing power, depth, and extra aromatic range. On State Lane's hillside site, that early, warm ripening window shows up as the firm, mineral-edged tannin structure this bottling is built on.

About Kapcsándy Family Winery

Kapcsandy Family Winery occupies Yountville's historic State Lane Vineyard, a site Beringer once used for its Private Reserve Cabernet line. The Kapcsandy family bought the property in 2000 and replanted it in 2001 on the advice of viticulturist John Wetlaufer, whose wife, Helen Turley, designed the winery itself. This Grand Vin is built almost entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, 95 percent of the blend with 5 percent Merlot, aged in 100 percent new oak, and produced in a run of roughly 700 cases a year, small enough that the estate has become a coveted name among serious Napa collectors.

Pairing suggestions

Cellared suggestions based on the wine and dish descriptions.

Bone-in ribeye with black truffle jus

The wine's firm, still-present tannins at peak maturity need the fat of a bone-in cut, and the truffle jus picks up the wine's own earthy, mineral undertone directly.

Braised short ribs with mushroom ragù

The wine's full, powerful body matches the dish's richness pound for pound, and the mushroom ragù echoes the wine's tobacco and mineral complexity rather than competing with the fruit.

Herb-crusted lamb chops with rosemary reduction

Cedar and spice on the finish align with rosemary's resinous character, and the wine's resolved tannins, twelve years on, won't fight the reduction's concentrated sweetness.

Frequently Asked

Is the 2014 Kapcsándy Grand Vin at its best right now?

Yes. As of 2026 it's inside its peak window (2023-2041), twelve years past harvest. The tannins have resolved without the wine losing its full-bodied structure, which is unusual, many Napa Cabernets this powerful either stay tight much longer or fade faster. This is the sweet spot.

Do I need to decant this wine?

A moderate decant works here, 45 to 60 minutes, since the tannins have already resolved through twelve years of bottle age but the wine is still full-bodied enough to benefit from some air. Skip the aggressive multi-hour decant this style needed in its youth.

Why is this bottling almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon instead of a fuller Bordeaux blend?

At 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, this leans far more varietal-pure than many Napa Bordeaux blends, which often run 15 to 25% blending grapes. The result is a wine that shows Cabernet's own pencil lead and cassis character more directly, with the Merlot doing only minor edge-softening.

Should I drink this through now or keep cellaring it?

The canonical CAI full drinking arc is 2021-2050. Within that arc, the peak window is 2023-2041. The full arc is the broader period the wine may drink well; the peak window is when it is most likely to show its best balance. Storage, fill level, cork condition, and preference can shift the decision. Taste before adding more air or holding the rest.
