At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2024-2030).
In 2026, the wine is in the heart of its peak drinking window. Kistler whites of this caliber typically take three to four years to settle into the dense, almost Burgundian texture the producer is known for, and Les Noisetiers 2020 is doing exactly that. Open it now from a cool cellar, with a brief aeration in the glass: the wine shows aromatic richness on the front and a Marcona-almond textural depth on the palate. There is no urgency to hold; the peak runs cleanly through 2030, and the wine will drink well through 2034. Drink now or over the next four years.

The ‘20 Les Noisetiers Chardonnay.
Kistler's Sonoma Coast cuvee, often compared to fine Meursault. The 2020 vintage was difficult in Northern California, but Kistler released only what passed the cellar.

Tasting note
Pale gold with a slight green-yellow rim, brilliant in the glass. The nose is aromatic and concentrated: white blossom, white peach, apricot, and pineapple on the front, with hazelnut skins and a flinty mineral note from the Sonoma Coast site emerging on the back. With air, lemon curd and toasted brioche from the elevage add depth. The palate is dense yet balanced: layered Marcona almond texture, vibrant citrus acidity that cuts the wine's richness, and a long mineral finish that has invited comparison to fine Meursault. The oak is fully integrated as nuttiness and toast rather than vanilla, in classical Kistler fashion. The finish is long, saline, and refreshingly dry.
The 2020 vintage
2020 was, in Wine Spectator's assessment, a year to forget for many Northern California producers, with a number of them not releasing wines because of challenging weather conditions, capped by wildfires during harvest and the resulting smoke-taint concerns. WS rated the Sonoma Coast vintage 87 (Very Good) and called for selective sourcing. Kistler's response was characteristic: rigorous selection in the cellar, with anything compromised culled before bottling. Les Noisetiers 2020 reflects that discipline. The wine carries the producer's house signature (richness, density, mineral spine) cleanly into a difficult vintage and rewards collectors who trust the Kistler name to navigate hard years.
About Kistler Vineyards
Kistler Vineyards has produced site-specific Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Sonoma since the late 1970s, and the estate is widely considered one of the reference producers of California Chardonnay in a Burgundian idiom. Les Noisetiers (the hazelnuts) is the entry point to the Chardonnay range: a multi-vineyard cuvee from Sonoma Coast sites that captures the house style of richness, density, and mineral spine. The bottling has been a touchstone for Kistler collectors since its introduction and offers the producer's signature for less than the single-vineyard bottlings cost.
From the cellar: pair with
Roasted Dover sole with brown butter and capers
The wine''s Marcona almond texture and mineral spine match the buttery richness and saline edge of the dish; the dense palate handles the brown butter without being overwhelmed.
Lobster risotto with Parmigiano
A Burgundian Chardonnay match: the wine''s density, hazelnut notes, and citrus acidity meet the risotto''s richness head-on; the lobster echoes the wine''s saline finish.
Roasted chicken with thyme and lemon
The textbook everyday pairing: Kistler''s aromatic richness and acid spine handle the savory roast and lemon brightness, with the oak nuttiness rounding out the herb.
Service & cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 50-54°F (10-12°C). Serve cool but not ice-cold; warmer than refrigerator temperature lets the texture and aromatics open.
- Decanting
- Not necessary. Pour into a Burgundy-style glass and let the wine open over 15 to 20 minutes.
- Cellar Storage
- 55°F (13°C) with 60-70% humidity, bottle on its side. Stable temperature is essential for ageworthy whites.

Frequently Asked
Is 2020 Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay ready to drink?
Yes. The wine entered its peak window in 2024 and is showing in the dense, settled phase that Kistler whites are known for in their fourth year. Open it now from a cool cellar, with a brief 15-to-20-minute aeration in the glass.
How long will 2020 Kistler Les Noisetiers age?
Kistler Chardonnays of this caliber typically age 8 to 12 years from a sound vintage. The 2020 has the acidity and density to match: peak drinking through 2030, with a graceful decline through 2034.
Was 2020 a good year for Sonoma Chardonnay?
It was a difficult year overall. Wildfires during harvest raised smoke-taint concerns, and Wine Spectator rated the Sonoma Coast vintage 87 (Very Good) with selective recommendations. Kistler''s rigorous cellar selection meant the wines they released cleared the bar; Les Noisetiers 2020 carries the house signature into a hard year.
How is Kistler Chardonnay different from typical California Chardonnay?
Kistler''s style is more Burgundian than mainstream California Chardonnay: richness and density rather than tropical fruit, integrated oak as nuttiness rather than vanilla, and a focus on textural depth and mineral spine. Comparisons to fine Meursault are common and earned.
Should I decant 2020 Kistler?
Decanting is not necessary. Pour into a Burgundy-style glass and let the wine open over 15 to 20 minutes. The aromatics and texture both lift noticeably with brief air.
