Peak 2028-2045

Where it is, November 2026

Approaching Peak: the peak window is ahead.

In 2026, this 2018 OVID sits inside its window (open since 2023) but hasn't reached its 2028 peak. At eight years old, the wine is past its most closed phase, tannins have begun to resolve, but the structure the winery and Vinous both describe as 'enduring' is still the dominant impression over the fruit. It's genuinely enjoyable tonight with a long decant. It will be a different, more integrated wine in two more years, when the mulberry and cassis fruit catches up to the structure around it.

The ‘18 OVID Napa Valley Red Wine.

OVID's 2018 Pritchard Hill red is drinkable now but two years from its 2028 peak, mulberry and licorice root built on a vintage Wine Spectator's chart rates 99 points, its Classic band.

Tasting note

Mulberry, bay leaf, cola and licorice root lead an unusually savory nose for a Napa Cabernet blend, joined by sage, sandalwood, cassis and fresh blackberry. This is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux blend (the winery does not disclose exact 2018 proportions), and that blending shows up as complexity rather than a single dominant grape character, herbal and savory notes doing as much work as the dark fruit.

The 2018 vintage

2018 was, by Wine Spectator's account, one of the strongest Napa vintages in years: the vintage chart rates it 99 points, its top Classic band. A wet winter left reservoirs full heading into the growing season, spring was mild with extended flowering that produced uniform clusters, and temperatures stayed warm and steady all summer without significant heat spikes, in what Wine Spectator called "a slow and steady year." That evenness let harvest stretch out; one Napa winemaker described finishing picking on October 29, two to three weeks later than normal. On Pritchard Hill's high-altitude soils, that slow, unhurried ripening shows up as the sculpted, detailed style OVID is known for.

About OVID Napa Valley

OVID farms Pritchard Hill's Hambright soil series, a high-elevation site east of Oakville, for its Cabernet Sauvignon-based flagship blend. Winemaker Austin Peterson has led the estate's winemaking since 2006; the estate's own materials describe an approach built around curiosity and experimentation in service of the vineyard's expression rather than a fixed house recipe. That combination of scarce, single-site allocations and mountain-fruit intensity has made OVID one of Napa's most sought cult addresses.

Pairing suggestions

Cellared suggestions based on the wine and dish descriptions.

Dry-aged ribeye

The wine's enduring, structured tannin matches dry-aging's concentrated umami, and the licorice root and cola notes stand up to the char rather than getting lost in it.

Rosemary-crusted lamb

Sage and sandalwood in the tasting profile mirror rosemary's herbal register directly, and the bright floral lift keeps the pairing from feeling heavy despite the wine's full body.

Truffle polenta

The savory, earthy bay leaf and licorice notes have real overlap with truffle, and the creamy polenta gives the wine's still-firm 2018 tannins something soft to work against.

Frequently Asked

Can I drink the 2018 OVID now, or should I wait?

You can drink it now, the window opened in 2023. But it's still two years from its 2028 peak, so expect structure to lead over fruit. If you have more than one bottle, opening one now and holding the rest to 2028 or later will show you two genuinely different wines.

How long should this be decanted?

At least 90 minutes, longer if you're opening it within the next year or two. The 'enduring structure' the winery describes is real at this age, and a long decant is the fastest way to soften that edge without just waiting out the clock.

Why doesn't OVID disclose the exact blend percentages for this vintage?

The winery adjusts its blend vintage to vintage based on what each lot delivers rather than working from a fixed formula, a common approach among small Pritchard Hill producers optimizing for the specific growing season instead of a house recipe. That flexibility is part of why 2018, an unusually slow, even-keeled year, produced such a detailed, restrained wine.

Is this a good bottle to start a vertical (multiple vintages) collection with?

It's a reasonable one. Wine Spectator singled out 2018 as one of the strongest Napa vintages in years, which makes it a useful high-water-mark bottle to compare future or past OVID vintages against once you've tasted it.
