Peak 2026-2032

Where it is, June 2026

At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2026-2032).

At eight years old in 2026, the wine has just entered its peak drinking window. The silky tannins and the polished mid-palate are at full expression now; the cassis, dark fruit, and tobacco are present without the harder edges that earlier vintages of this wine carry in youth. Aromatically the wine is moving from primary fruit into the violet-and-cedar register that defines mature To Kalon Cabernet. Drink it now or hold through the early 2030s with full confidence.

Tasting note

Deep ruby-purple in the glass. The nose lifts with cassis, dark fruit, and tobacco, layered with violet, cedar, and a fine touch of graphite that signals the To Kalon site. The palate is silky on entry with no hard edges, mouth-filling through the mid-palate with the polished tannins for which the Reserve is known, and structured by bright acidity that keeps the rich fruit from feeling weighty. The finish is long, perfumed, and textured. Jeb Dunnuck at Wine Advocate awarded the 2018 Reserve 97 points, calling it the definitive expression of the vintage.

The 2018 vintage

2018 in Napa Valley was a near-textbook vintage. Abundant winter rain recharged the soils, a long warm growing season with cool nights extended hang time, and a gradual late harvest under perfect conditions produced wines with classical structure: vibrant acidity, full phenolic ripeness, and the kind of architecture that defines top ageable years. To Kalon Vineyard, where the Mondavi Reserve is sourced, is one of California's most historic vineyard sites, planted in 1868 by H.W. Crabb. The 2018 vintage suited its profile: structured, layered, built for the long arc.

About Robert Mondavi

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi himself, in what is widely credited as the moment Napa Valley entered the modern fine-wine era. The Reserve Cabernet is the winery's flagship, sourced primarily from the historic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. The house style is polished and balanced: rich without being heavy, structured without being austere. The Reserve sits among the long-running benchmark Napa Cabernets and its consistent quality across decades is one of the most reliable in the valley.

From the cellar: pair with

Filet mignon with peppercorn cream sauce

Lean, tender beef with a rich peppercorn-cream sauce matches the wine's silky polish. The black pepper echoes the wine's graphite and tobacco notes.

Lamb tenderloin with rosemary jus

Lamb at this preparation level, with a structured wine reduction, complements the wine's elegance without overpowering its developing complexity.

Aged Gruyère with walnuts and dried cherries

The classic mature Cabernet pairing: nutty crystalline cheese, the dried-cherry fruit accent, and the walnut tannin echo all align with the wine's evolving profile.

Frequently Asked

Is the 2018 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet ready to drink?

Yes. The wine entered its drinking window in 2024 and peak begins in 2026. It is showing beautifully now and will continue to develop through the early 2030s.

What makes the Reserve different from the regular Mondavi Cabernet?

The Reserve is sourced primarily from the historic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, sees more new French oak, and is bottled only from the best lots in any vintage. It is the winery's flagship and is built for cellaring; the regular Mondavi Cabernet is sourced more broadly and made for earlier drinking.

How long will it age?

Top Mondavi Reserve vintages routinely cellar for 15 to 20 years. The projected window runs through 2037, with peak expression between 2026 and 2032. The 2018 has the structure to push toward the long end of that range.

Is 2018 a good Napa vintage?

Yes, widely considered one of the best recent vintages. Long even growing season, vibrant acidity, structured tannins, classical proportions. The Mondavi Reserve from this year is one of the highly regarded releases of the vintage.
