Peak 2009-2030

Where it is, June 2026

At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2009-2030).

In 2026 this is a fully mature wine in late peak, near the top of a long plateau. The drinking window opened around 2007, and the wine settled into a peak that runs from 2009 through 2030, so at twenty-four years old it sits comfortably in the back half of that stretch with several relaxed years still ahead. Hard decline is not expected until roughly 2039, which leaves real margin, but the secondary and tertiary character here points to drinking rather than further holding. There is no upside left in waiting; the reward is in the glass now. Pull corks over the next several years and serve sound bottles with confidence.

Tasting note

A profound, ethereal wine that has evolved magnificently over two decades. Notes of dried rose, cassis, tobacco, old cedar, forest floor, and faint graphite cascade from the glass. On the palate it is at once powerful and weightless, the body still a full 9 in scale yet carried with uncanny lightness. The original tannin of 8 has not faded so much as fully resolved, now silky and seamless, framing rather than gripping. A thread of vivid acidity, moderate at 5 but perfectly placed, lifts the fruit and keeps the wine fresh despite its concentration. Everything is in balance: extraordinary depth held in suspension, nothing heavy, nothing tired. The finish is hauntingly long, perfumed, and refined, trailing dried flowers and sweet earth long after the glass is set down.

The 2002 vintage

The 2002 vintage was a dense, rich, ripe year in Napa Valley, producing Cabernet of superb depth and complexity that rivaled the celebrated 2001 vintage. Warm, generous ripening built layered concentration and full phenolic maturity in the hillside fruit, the kind of raw material that ages on a long curve. More than twenty years on, that early density has converted into resolved, perfumed maturity rather than fatigue, which is exactly what a top 2002 Napa Cabernet was built to deliver.

About Sloan

Sloan Estate is a tiny Rutherford hillside property in the hills above Auberge du Soleil, roughly twelve acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Stuart Sloan made the first wine in 2000, and the estate produces around 600 cases of a single proprietary Bordeaux-style red built for concentration and long aging. The dense, opulent house style and small volume put this bottling firmly in cult territory.

From the cellar: pair with

Herb-crusted rack of lamb, medium rare

The body of 9 stands up to rich, fatty lamb without being overwhelmed, while the still-firm tannin structure of 8, now silky, slices cleanly through the fat and echoes the wine's savory, cedar-and-tobacco depth.

Dry-aged ribeye with a peppercorn reduction

A full-bodied wine at 9 needs a substantial cut, and the resolved tannin of 8 binds with the seared crust and rendered fat; the moderate acidity of 5 keeps each bite from turning heavy and refreshes the palate.

Mushroom and truffle risotto

The forest-floor and earthy tertiary notes mirror the mushrooms, while the acidity of 5 cuts the creamy starch and the gentle, fully resolved tannin of 8 sits comfortably against the dish without clashing, letting the wine's perfume lead.

Service & cellaring

Serving Temp
60-64F (16-18C)
Decanting
Decant 30 to 45 minutes, gently. At twenty-four years the tannins are fully resolved, so the goal is to lift the perfume and let the wine open, not to soften it. Stand the bottle upright for a day first, then pour off the sediment carefully and avoid a long, aggressive aeration that can blow off the delicate dried-rose and forest-floor aromatics.
Cellar Storage
55F (13C), 60-70% humidity, bottle on its side.

The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked

When should I drink the Sloan Proprietary Red 2002?

Drink it now. In 2026 the wine is fully mature and in late peak, sitting in the back half of a plateau that runs from 2009 to 2030. The window opened around 2007 and hard decline is not expected until roughly 2039, but there is no benefit to holding further; the reward is in the glass over the next several years.

Should I decant the 2002, and for how long?

Yes, but briefly, around 30 to 45 minutes. After twenty-four years the tannins are fully resolved, so decanting is about lifting the perfume and removing sediment, not softening structure. Stand the bottle upright for a day, pour gently off the sediment, and avoid a long, hard aeration that can scatter the delicate dried-flower and forest-floor aromas.

What food pairs best with this wine?

Reach for rich, savory main courses. Herb-crusted rack of lamb, a dry-aged ribeye with a peppercorn reduction, or a mushroom and truffle risotto all work because the full body of 9 and the silky, resolved tannin of 8 match the weight of the dish while the moderate acidity of 5 keeps each bite fresh and balanced.

Can I still cellar the 2002, or should I hold it?

You can hold sound bottles a few more years, since hard decline is not projected until around 2039, but holding will not improve the wine. At twenty-four years it is fully mature with secondary and tertiary character already developed. Store it at 55F with 60 to 70 percent humidity on its side, but plan to drink rather than continue aging.
