Peak 2026-2043

Where it is, November 2026

At Peak: inside the peak window (2026-2043), within the full drinking arc.

2026 is the first year of this bottle's stated peak window, which runs through 2043; the window opened in 2024. The tannin is still firm rather than fully resolved, and right now the wine shows its architecture more than its generosity: dense black fruit, graphite, and a long structural spine. This is mountain-hillside tannin, not valley-floor softness, so a decanter earns its keep here. Give it time in the glass and it drinks well today, and the next few years should knit that tannin more fully into the fruit.

The ‘19 Melanson Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grown above the fog line on Pritchard Hill's volcanic rock, this 2019 Melanson Cabernet just entered a peak window that runs to 2043.

Tasting note

The nose leads with creme de cassis and baked plums, moving into blackberry pie, dried herbs, and a crushed-stone note that reads straight off the vineyard's volcanic rock. The palate is full-bodied and rich, with the purity of fruit this site is known for, but the tannin is firm and tightly knit rather than soft. Tobacco, scorched earth, and graphite sit underneath the fruit. The finish is fresh and crisp, longer than the wine's weight would suggest, and it closes on stone rather than on fruit.

The 2019 vintage

Wine Spectator scores the 2019 Napa Cabernet vintage 96 points and rates it Classic, describing a wet spring that produced less overt tannic structure, with small, concentrated berries giving dense but pure fruit. Harvest stretched into October because August and September stayed very moderate, and the resulting wines came out ripe and lush while staying well-defined, in Wine Spectator's words a worthy follow-up to the benchmark 2018 vintage. That long, moderate finish to the season matters at Melanson, which sits above the fog line on Pritchard Hill with sun on it most of the day; a temperate stretch like 2019's is generally what a site that exposed needs to ripen evenly rather than bake.

About Tor Kenward Family Wines

TOR Wines was founded in 2001 by Tor and Susan Kenward, and Jeff Ames has been the winemaker for more than two decades, crafting wines the estate describes as letting the vineyard speak first. TOR has partnered with grower Greg Melanson on his steep, rocky Pritchard Hill vineyard since 2013, and this wine is bottled under that vineyard's name rather than a proprietary label. The site sits at roughly 1,200 feet on Sobrante loam fractured with volcanic rock, above the fog line, which the winery credits for the wine's density and structure.

Pairing suggestions

Cellared suggestions based on the wine and dish descriptions.

Herb-crusted New York strip, rare to medium-rare

Firm tannin needs fat and protein to soften into; the herb crust meets the wine's dried-herb note, and the char answers its scorched-earth edge.

Rosemary-crusted leg of lamb

Lamb's mineral, gently gamy character sits well with the wine's graphite and crushed-stone edge, and rosemary bridges to the dried herbs without fighting the cassis fruit.

Aged Gruyere with honey and toasted walnuts

A no-cook option for a young, tannic bottle: salt in the cheese cuts the tannin, and walnut plus honey meets the wine's baked-plum sweetness.

Frequently Asked

How long should I decant it?

Ninety minutes to two hours in 2026. The tannin hasn't resolved yet, and a young Pritchard Hill Cabernet opens slowly, so give it real time in the glass rather than a quick pour. If you're short on time, double-decanting back and forth gets you most of the way there. A decade from now, 45 minutes should be enough.

How does 2019 compare with 2018 for Napa Cabernet?

For drinking sooner, 2019 has a slight edge. Wine Spectator's own vintage note describes 2019 as having less overt tannic structure than usual, thanks to a wet spring, which is part of why the vintage is generally more approachable young, and calls it a worthy follow-up to the benchmark 2018 vintage. With this bottling's window running through 2043 either way, the real question is when you want to drink it, not which vintage lasts longer.

How should I store this bottle if I plan to hold it into the 2030s or 2040s?

Steadiness matters more than hitting an exact number. A closet that holds in the low-to-mid 60s Fahrenheit year-round is generally better than a cellar that swings with the seasons, since repeated expansion and contraction is what pushes wine past its cork over a multi-decade hold. Keep humidity around 60 to 70 percent, lay the bottle on its side, and keep it dark. With a stated hard-decline estimate of 2051, a proper storage setup is worth the investment for a wine built to go this long.

What's a lighter pairing option if a big steak feels heavy for a Tuesday?

Try a mushroom and thyme risotto finished with parmesan. The umami and earthiness pick up the wine's scorched-earth and tobacco notes, and the dish's fat and starch give the firm young tannin something to soften against, without needing a full protein-forward meal.
