Mineral, Long-Aging, Sweetness-Optional
Riesling Wines: Drinking Windows & Cellaring Guide
Riesling is the most underrated long-aging white wine in the world. Its high natural acidity gives it a longer drinking window than most reds, and its expressiveness across sweetness levels (trocken, kabinett, spatlese, auslese, beerenauslese, trockenbeerenauslese, and the rare eiswein) means a single varietal can produce wines designed for very different occasions. The reference regions are Germany's Mosel (steep slate slopes, low-alcohol, racy acidity), the Rheingau (richer, more powerful), the Pfalz, and the Nahe; Austria's Wachau (whose Smaragd-tier wines are drier and more powerful), Kremstal, and Kamptal; Alsace in France (off-dry to dry, increasingly textural); the Clare and Eden Valleys in Australia (bone-dry, citrus-driven); the Finger Lakes in New York; and parts of the Pacific Northwest. Top German Spatlese and Auslese from structured vintages (1971, 1990, 2001, 2010, 2018) reliably age 30 to 50 years. Trocken (dry) Grosses Gewachs ages 12 to 20 years. Australian dry Riesling from Clare and Eden Valley ages 15 to 25 years on its citrus-and-mineral spine. Riesling's secondary aromas are unique: petrol, kerosene, and lime cordial emerge as the wine ages, alongside honey and dried apricot in sweeter examples.

How long does Riesling age?
Top German Spatlese and Auslese from structured vintages reliably age 30 to 50 years. Trocken (dry) Grosses Gewachs ages 12 to 20 years. Australian dry Riesling from Clare and Eden Valley ages 15 to 25 years. Entry-level Riesling should be drunk within 3 to 5 years.
What is petrol in aged Riesling?
Petrol or kerosene aroma in mature Riesling comes from a compound called TDN that develops with bottle age. It is a hallmark of properly aged Riesling, not a flaw. The character is more pronounced in warm-grown Rieslings (Pfalz, Australia) than in cool-grown Mosel or Rheingau examples.
Sweet or dry Riesling: which ages longer?
Sweet, on average. The sugar in Spatlese, Auslese, and especially BA, TBA, and Eiswein acts as a preservative and extends the aging arc to 30 to 50 years. Top dry Riesling (Grosses Gewachs, Wachau Smaragd, Australian Clare Valley) ages 15 to 25 years on acid alone.
Should I decant Riesling?
Generally no. Riesling is best poured into the glass and allowed to open there. Aged Riesling (15+ years) can benefit from 15 to 20 minutes in a decanter, but most Riesling shows best with no aeration. Use a tulip-shaped glass.
What temperature should I serve Riesling?
Dry Riesling: 50F to 55F. Off-dry and sweet Riesling: 45F to 50F. Aged Riesling tends to show better warmer than young Riesling. Pull from the fridge 15 to 20 minutes before pouring for serious bottles.
