Right now: In 2026, the Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli 2021 is fully pre-window - the drinking window does not open until 2028, and the wine is in a structured, integrating phase that rewards patience over early opening. The north-facing Montosoli site produces wines with an inherent freshness and vertical energy that differs from south-facing Montalcino sites, and this quality is present in 2026 as tightly coiled structural precision beneath firm tannins. The T8 A8 B8 profile places this wine in a position of balance - not as dense as warmer-vintage south-facing Brunelli, but built with enough structural weight to demand genuine cellaring. Peak drinking begins in 2033 and runs through 2048 with the hard decline at 2058 - among the longest arcs in the current Montalcino market.

Tasting Note

A vivid garnet with clarity that speaks to the north-facing Montosoli elevation. The nose combines power and precision in a way specific to this historic vineyard: dried violet, black cherry, and warm earth open first, followed by red plum, iron mineral, and a lifted graphite note that distinguishes Montosoli from more opulent south-facing Brunello sites. On the palate, the structure reflects the north-facing elevation advantage: tannins at T8 are firm but never rustic, acid at A8 is persistent and bright, and the full B8 body avoids the Mediterranean density that marks warmer sites in warmer vintages. Flavors of black cherry, dried herbs, iron mineral schist, and a long graphite finish define this single-vineyard expression.

About Altesino

Altesino holds a distinctive place in Brunello di Montalcino history as one of the first estates to produce a single-vineyard Brunello, launching the Montosoli bottling in the late 1970s at a time when the concept of cru Brunello was essentially unknown. The estate farms the Montosoli vineyard - a north-facing slope at 380-480 meters above sea level with galestro and alberese clay soils - using methods focused on preserving site expression: hand harvesting, native yeast fermentation, and a minimum of 36 months aging in large Slavonian oak casks before bottling. The Montosoli has earned recognition as one of the defining single-vineyard sites of the appellation, and Altesino has been its consistent champion and custodian for nearly five decades.

Frequently Asked

When should I open the Altesino Montosoli 2021?

The drinking window opens in 2028 and peak drinking runs from 2033 through 2048. In 2026 this wine is fully pre-window with firm T8 tannins that are still integrating. Wait until 2028 at minimum and decant 2-3 hours. The hard decline is at 2058, giving this wine over three decades of potential from now.

What makes the Montosoli vineyard special?

Montosoli is a north-facing slope at 380-480 meters elevation in Montalcino, with galestro and alberese clay soils providing excellent drainage and thermal regulation. North-facing slopes receive less direct afternoon sun than south-facing sites, preserving aromatic precision and vertical lift that distinguishes Montosoli from more opulent south-facing Brunelli. Altesino has farmed this site as a single-vineyard bottling since the late 1970s, making it one of the original cru designations in the appellation.

What food pairs best with Altesino Montosoli?

The T8 A8 B8 structure is versatile enough for substantial pairings: Florentine T-bone steak for its char and marbling, slow-roasted suckling pig with fennel, or aged Tuscan Pecorino with truffle honey. The north-facing site character - vertical lift and iron-mineral finish - works well with both meat preparations and aged cheese, making this one of the more food-flexible single-vineyard Brunelli.

How does the Montosoli 2021 compare to a standard Brunello di Montalcino?

Altesino Montosoli is a single-vineyard reserve-tier Brunello from one of the appellation historic north-facing sites. The T8 A8 B8 structure is more concentrated than a standard Brunello, and the drinking arc from 2028 to 2058 is significantly longer. The north-facing elevation advantage also means the wine retains more freshness and vertical lift than south-facing Brunello sites at comparable price points.
