Drinking Window
In 2026: Too YoungHolding. Drinking window opens in 2028.
Right now: In 2026, the 2019 Soldera Case Basse remains firmly in its infant phase, a full two years before its projected drinking window opens in 2028. This is not a wine to touch now. The structure is tightly coiled, the acidity vivid and unyielding, and the tannins — fine-grained as they are — still form a formidable shell around the wine's aromatic core. Collectors who have cellared this bottle face a decade-plus wait before the exotic spice, dried citrus, and ethereal mineral complexity that defines Soldera's style begins to fully integrate. The true decade of this wine lies between 2035 and 2050.
Tasting Note
Pale garnet with a translucent, glowing rim characteristic of Soldera's lighter-extraction philosophy. The nose is arrestingly aromatic — lifted incense, dried orange peel, worn leather, and a core of black cherry threaded with mineral wild berry. Sour citrus and sage drift through like smoke. On the palate, the wine is simultaneously delicate and tensile: fine-grained tannins grip with quiet authority while vivid acidity carries the fruit through a long, cedar-dusted finish.
About Soldera
Soldera — the estate formally known as Case Basse — stands apart from virtually every other Tuscan producer by its near-total rejection of modern winemaking shortcuts. Gianfranco Soldera, and now his estate's successors, crafts 100% Sangiovese from biodynamically farmed vines in the Montalcino hills using extended maceration of up to 60 days, followed by lengthy aging in large Slavonian oak casks. Yields are fanatically low. The result is a wine of such precision and individuality that it is classified as Toscana IGT rather than Brunello DOCG — a deliberate choice that reflects the estate's independence of spirit.
Food Pairings
Bistecca alla Fiorentina
The wine's vivid acidity and fine tannin grip cut cleanly through charred dry-aged beef fat without overwhelming the meat's mineral depth.
Aged Pecorino di Pienza with truffle honey
Earthy aged sheep's milk cheese mirrors the wine's leather and mineral notes while the honey bridges its taut citrus acidity.
Wild boar ragu over hand-rolled pappardelle
The gamey richness of cinghiale and slow-cooked tomato brings out the wine's cedar and dried herb complexity without competing with its delicate frame.
Service & Cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 62-65°F (17-18°C)
- Decanting
- Until 2028, do not open. From 2028 onward, decant 2-3 hours to allow the wine's tightly wound aromatics to unfurl. In its peak window from 2035, decanting becomes more about aeration than taming structure — 1-2 hours will suffice.
- Cellar Storage
- 55°F (13°C), 65-70% humidity, bottle on its side in darkness.
Frequently Asked
When can I start drinking the 2019 Soldera Case Basse?
The drinking window opens in 2028, still two years away from today. Opening it before then risks encountering a wine that has not yet released its aromatics or softened its structure. Most serious collectors target 2035 or later for the full peak experience, which extends through 2050.
Should I decant this wine?
Yes, always decant, even after the window opens in 2028. Plan for 2-3 hours of decanting in the early window years to allow the concentrated aromatics and fine tannins to open fully. During peak drinking from 2035, 1-2 hours will be sufficient as the wine will have naturally integrated.
What food pairs best with Soldera Case Basse?
Think Tuscan in origin and substance: bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, aged Pecorino with truffled accompaniments. This wine needs protein and fat to meet its acidity and structure on equal terms.
How should I store this bottle?
Cellaring at 55°F (13°C) with 65-70% humidity and the bottle on its side in darkness is essential. Soldera's wines are built for decades of slow evolution and any temperature fluctuation above 65°F risks accelerating the process.
