Right now: In 2026, the 2007 BOND Melbury is at full peak - the window of 2020-2035 places this year squarely in the middle of its optimal drinking range. Wine Spectator scored the 2007 Napa Cabernet vintage a Classic 97, calling it a "textbook year" of "small crop, ideal ripening, wines defined by complexity and plush tannins." Parker awarded the wine 97 points, calling it "even more impressive out of bottle than from barrel." At nineteen years from harvest, the wine has had ample time to integrate its full-bodied power: the cedar, licorice, and opulent black fruit described at release are now woven into a seamlessly complex, multi-layered expression that will remain at this level through 2030 before beginning any gradual softening.

Tasting Note

Dense ruby with a brilliant garnet core, showing no significant browning at the rim - a testament to the wine's exceptional structural integrity. The nose is opulent and layered: cedarwood, barbecue spice, and licorice lead over a bed of ripe black currant and dark cherry, with spring flower notes adding an unexpected lift to an otherwise powerfully framed bouquet. The palate delivers on every promise of the nose - full-bodied and commanding, the tannins are sweet and velvety in the manner that only an exceptional hillside Napa site and textbook vintage can produce. Integration is extraordinary. The finish is extraordinarily long, marked by dark fruit, spice, and a precise mineral thread that carries for nearly a minute.

About BOND

BOND is Bill Harlan's grand cru concept for Napa Valley - a portfolio of single-site Cabernet Sauvignons drawn from a handful of rigorously selected hillside vineyards across the valley. These bottlings are collected for their profound terroir delineation, longevity, and blue-chip status in the upper echelon of Napa Cabernet. Melbury, sourced from a western hillside site, is known for producing the most elegant and mineral of the BOND portfolio - a cooler, more structured expression than Vecina, with an unusual capacity for long development that has made the 2007 release a benchmark for the brand.

Decanting
In 2026, the 2007 Melbury benefits from a confident 60-90 minute decant in a large Bordeaux glass or carafe. The wine is at full peak but retains the structure that BOND's hillside sites and 2007's concentrated tannins provide; extended aeration allows the layered complexity to fully express.

Frequently Asked

Is the 2007 BOND Melbury at peak in 2026?

Yes — 2026 is a prime year to open it. The wine is projected at peak from 2020 through 2035, and in 2026 it is showing the full integration of its opulent fruit, cedar, and minerality that Parker's 97-point rating described. There is no urgency to open it, but no reason to hold further either.

What score did the 2007 BOND Melbury receive?

Robert Parker awarded 97 points via Wine Advocate, calling it 'even more impressive out of bottle than from barrel.' Wine Spectator rated the overall 2007 Napa vintage a Classic 97. The wine is one of the most critically acclaimed releases in the BOND portfolio.

How long can I continue to cellar the 2007 Melbury?

The projected peak window runs to 2035, with the hard decline not expected until 2040. Collectors can confidently hold through the late 2020s, though the wine is delivering excellent complexity right now in 2026. There is no advantage to waiting much longer if your goal is to drink at peak.
