Too Young: holding.

As of May 2026 the 2023 Mongravey Margaux is still three to four years from its ideal opening window, which begins around 2028 and peaks between 2029 and 2038. The wine retains a youthful energy that is appealing but the tannin structure has not yet fully resolved, and those who open a bottle now should allow a full two hours of decanting. The deep purple color confirms the wine's youth, and the savory secondary notes of espresso and olive that will become more prominent with age are just beginning to emerge. Collectors who can wait will find a significantly more rewarding wine through the early 2030s, when the fruit, structure and savory complexity will achieve full integration.

The 23 Margaux.

A deeply colored, cassis-and-espresso-driven Margaux with smooth fine tannins and genuine aging potential through the late 2030s.

Tasting note

The 2023 Chateau Mongravey Margaux opens with a deep purple color of impressive density for a commune-level Margaux. The nose is complex and multi-layered: cassis and mulled blackberry lead, followed by dark cherry and ripe plum preserves, then a secondary arc of espresso, dark olives and bay leaf that adds savory intrigue. Raspberry and fresh red berries provide lift and brightness. Spice notes of paprika and vanilla intertwine with grilled toast from the oak aging, and a floral violet note emerges as the wine breathes. On the palate the wine is supple and structured, with smooth fine tannins that have the grain of a well-made Margaux without the austerity. The mid-palate is generous and fruit-forward, and the finish is long, carrying the black currant and espresso notes well into the after-taste. This is a wine that delivers the characteristic elegance and perfume of the Margaux appellation while maintaining genuine concentration and depth.

The 2023 vintage

The 2023 vintage in Margaux and the broader Medoc was one of the most discussed in recent years. Following 2022's heat and drought, 2023 brought a more balanced growing season with adequate spring rainfall, a warm summer with selective heat spikes and a favorable September harvest period. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant communes of the Medoc benefited from the warm summer, producing deeply colored, concentrated fruit with excellent phenolic ripeness. Margaux, with its lighter gravel soils that drain rapidly, was well-suited to the season's conditions, and the vintage is regarded as producing wines of classic structure and long aging potential.

From the cellar: pair with

Roast rack of lamb with black olive tapenade

The wine's dark olive and cassis notes find a natural mirror in the tapenade, and the fine tannins integrate perfectly with the mineral richness of French lamb.

Duck confit with cherry reduction

The wine's cherry and dark fruit notes complement duck confit while its firm tannin structure cuts through the fat of the preparation.

Aged Comte with walnuts

The savory, nutty character of aged Comte echoes the espresso and bay leaf notes in the wine, creating an intellectually satisfying pairing.
