Peak 2027-2038

Where it is, June 2026

Approaching Peak: drinkable, but best years are ahead.

In 2026, the 2021 Carmes de Rieussec is in its drinking window, having become accessible in 2024, and building toward a peak expected around 2027. A product of the most challenging vintage in a generation for Sauternes producers - 2021 saw a severe spring frost that devastated yields across the appellation - the 2021 Carmes demonstrates remarkable consistency given the difficult season. At five years from harvest, the wine shows honeyed grapefruit zest, fresh mango, and a mineral warmth that reflects the Rieussec terroir rather than the botrytis-dominant richness of great Sauternes vintages. The approachability phase is genuinely here in 2026: the sweetness is integrated without being cloying, the acidity provides lift, and the freshness that characterizes Sauternes made in leaner growing seasons gives this wine a brightness that more opulent years lack. Those who prefer to hold through 2027 will encounter slightly more developed secondary character - caramel, dried apricot, some honeyed depth - but the current window already delivers genuine pleasure. The wine's small production from frost-ravaged yields adds scarcity to its character.

Tasting note

Pale green-gold with excellent clarity and a fine, bright rim that reflects the wine's relative youth and the leaner growing conditions of 2021. The nose is immediately honeyed and aromatic: candied grapefruit zest and fresh mango lead, followed by fine honey and a stormy, fresh quality that is characteristic of Sauternes made without the full weight of classic botrytis. Blood orange, caramel, and dried herbs emerge with air, adding complexity and secondary nuance. The wine's sweetness is present but restrained - a hallmark of the limited botrytis available in 2021 following the spring frost - which gives the overall profile a freshness and lightness not found in richer years. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and glycerin-textured with integrated sweetness that neither overwhelms nor disappoints. Acidity provides the crucial counterpoint to the sugar, keeping the wine lively and food-compatible. The finish brings mineral warmth and dried herb complexity through a moderately long close. This is a genuine Sauternes expression, just at a lighter point on the sweetness and concentration spectrum.

The 2021 vintage

The 2021 vintage in Sauternes was among the most difficult in recent memory, defined primarily by a severe spring frost in April that decimated crop levels across the appellation. Wine Spectator awarded 2021 Sauternes a Very Good 89 points, noting that the frost meant very few wines were made and that the surviving versions show bright, juicy, solidly built profiles without the extra complexity of great years requiring multiple tries for botrytis selection. For Chateau Rieussec, the frost substantially reduced the Carmes de Rieussec production. The wines that survived show an inherent freshness from the cool, difficult growing conditions rather than the opulence of a classic botrytis-rich year. This is a Sauternes vintage to drink with pleasure from the mid-window rather than cellar for extreme longevity.

About Chateau Rieussec

Chateau Rieussec is a Premier Grand Cru Classe Sauternes estate owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1984, producing some of the appellation's most mineral and structured sweet wines. Carmes de Rieussec is the second wine of the estate, made from younger vines and specific lot selections, sharing the limestone and clay soils of the Rieussec plateau but with slightly lighter structure than the grand vin. Winemaker Sebastien Lafontan oversees a program that uses selective hand-harvesting with multiple tries through the vineyards to capture botrytis-affected grapes at their peak. The 2021 vintage was vinified with particular care given the small crop, with each lot selected for its quality and aromatic character rather than sheer concentration.

From the cellar: pair with

Foie Gras Torchon with Brioche

The wine's integrated sweetness and high acidity (6/10) create the classic Sauternes pairing with foie gras - the fat of the liver is cut by the wine's acidity while the honey and fruit provide complementary richness.

Roquefort or Gorgonzola Dolce

A small glass of Sauternes alongside salty, creamy blue cheese is one of the great French wine pairings - the wine's sweetness contrasts with the cheese's salinity while the acidity cuts through the fat.

Peach Tarte Tatin or Apricot Galette

The wine's fresh mango, grapefruit zest, and dried apricot aromatics create natural harmony with stone fruit pastry, and its restrained sweetness in the 2021 vintage avoids overwhelming the dessert.

Service & cellaring

Serving Temp
46-50F (8-10C)
Decanting
Serve chilled at 46 to 50F. No decanting needed, but 15 minutes of warming in the glass enhances the aromatic complexity. Can also be paired with savory dishes - the wine's acidity handles rich foie gras or blue cheese effectively.
Cellar Storage
45F (7C), 70% humidity, stored on its side.

Frequently Asked

When is the 2021 Carmes de Rieussec at its best?

The wine is in window now in 2026 and building toward a peak around 2027 to 2030. Given the lighter style of the 2021 vintage - a result of the spring frost and limited botrytis - the wine will reach its fullest complexity earlier than a richer year. The drinking window extends through 2038, but the brightest expression is available in the 2026 to 2032 period.

How is the 2021 Sauternes vintage different from other years?

The 2021 Sauternes vintage was dramatically affected by a severe spring frost in April that reduced crop yields across the appellation to very low levels. Wine Spectator awarded it a Very Good 89 points, significantly below the Classic ratings for 2023 or 2019 Sauternes. The wines that were produced show inherent freshness and lightness rather than the botrytis-rich opulence of great years - a different but still genuine Sauternes character.

What food pairs best with this Sauternes?

Foie gras torchon with brioche is the definitive Sauternes pairing and works beautifully with the 2021 Carmes - the wine's acidity cuts through the fat while the honeyed fruit provides complementary richness. Blue cheese including Roquefort or Gorgonzola Dolce is another classic. For dessert, peach or apricot tarte tatin harmonizes with the wine's stone fruit aromatics without competing on sweetness.

What is the difference between Carmes de Rieussec and the Chateau Rieussec grand vin?

Carmes de Rieussec is the second sweet wine of the estate, produced from younger vines and specific lot selections on the same limestone-clay terroir as the grand vin. The grand vin Chateau Rieussec is more concentrated, more botrytis-influenced, and longer-lived - typically aging for 20 to 40 years in great vintages. Carmes de Rieussec is designed for a more accessible medium-term window of 15 to 24 years, offering the house's mineral Sauternes character at an earlier drinking stage and lower price.
