At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2025-2031).
In May 2026, the 2018 Chateau Haut-Maco Cuvee Jean Bernard is in the early stages of its drinking window, which opened in 2024. The wine is still young and firm, with tannins that are beginning to integrate but have not fully softened. Current drinking is possible with a generous decant of 90 minutes to two hours, which will help the dark fruit expand and the firm structure relax. The peak window of 2025 through 2031 represents the wine's fullest expression. Allow the current firmness to be seen as a promise of future complexity rather than a fault. By 2028, the wine will have integrated more fully and will show with considerably more aromatic breadth.

Tasting note
Chateau Haut-Maco's Cuvee Jean Bernard is the estate's flagship expression from the Cotes de Bourg appellation, produced on the Right Bank north of Bordeaux from old vines on clay-limestone soils. The 2018 vintage is a wine of genuine power and concentration, reflecting both the exceptional growing season and the estate's commitment to full extraction and serious wine structure. On the nose the wine is concentrated and focused, with attractive black fruit depth: ripe blackberry, dark plum, and blackcurrant layer together with a firm mineral backbone. Spice box notes add complexity alongside a subtle earthy, mineral underpinning that reflects the Cotes de Bourg terroir. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and muscular, with young, firm tannins that provide excellent structure and signal the wine's aging potential. The fruit depth is impressive, filling the mid-palate with waves of dark berry and cherry, while the finish is long and structured. This is not a wine for immediate uncritical consumption; it has the stuffing to age meaningfully and will reward patience with increased complexity and integration.
The 2018 vintage
The 2018 Bordeaux growing season was exceptional across the Right Bank and satellite appellations, including the Cotes de Bourg. Warm summer conditions produced fruit of deep concentration and robust tannin structure, while timely rainfall kept vines in balance through the growing season. The Cotes de Bourg's clay-limestone soils, which retain moisture better than the gravel-dominant Medoc, were particularly well-suited to the warm, occasionally dry conditions of 2018, producing wines of greater substance and density than many expected from this often underrated appellation. For Haut-Maco's old vines, the vintage yielded fruit of impressive depth and aging potential.
About Château Haut-Macô
Chateau Haut-Maco has established a reputation as one of the Cotes de Bourg's most serious estates, with a commitment to producing wines that reflect the appellation's full potential rather than competing on accessibility and price alone. The Cuvee Jean Bernard is named for a family member and represents the estate's highest aspirations: maximum extraction, old vine intensity, and a wine built for significant bottle aging. The property demonstrates that the Cotes de Bourg can produce wines of genuine collector interest when approached with the same seriousness as the more famous Bordeaux appellations.
From the cellar: pair with
Grilled ribeye steak with bone marrow butter
The wine's muscular tannins and concentrated dark fruit demand the richest, most intensely flavored red meat preparations to achieve balance.
Braised lamb shank with black olive and herbs
The dark fruit depth and firm structure of this Cotes de Bourg are well-matched by the earthy, slow-cooked richness of braised lamb.
Aged hard cheese such as aged cheddar or Manchego
The wine's tannic grip and concentrated fruit stand up effectively to the fat and sharp intensity of aged hard cheese.
