Peak 2024-2033

Where it is, June 2026

At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2024-2033).

In 2026 the Pianrosso is firmly inside its peak window. The tannins have integrated and the secondary notes (dried cherry, leather, dried herbs, and iron) are beginning to layer over the primary fruit. The wine is open and complex now with 60-90 minutes of decanting. There are still 5-7 years of peak expression ahead before the wine begins to soften further.

The 12 Pianrosso Brunello di Montalcino.

A single-vineyard Brunello from one of Montalcino's most respected estates: structured, age-worthy, and just hitting its stride.

Tasting note

Garnet with a slowly receding rim. The nose lifts with dried cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, and a distinct iron-and-leather note that signals proper Brunello maturity. The palate is full-bodied with firm but integrating tannins (7/10) and bright acidity (7/10) that keeps the wine vertical. Sour cherry, blood orange, and dried Mediterranean herbs run through the mid-palate. The finish is long, savory, and finishes on a note of warm earth and dried rose petal.

The 2012 vintage

2012 in Brunello di Montalcino produced wines of structure and concentration, with firm tannins and good aging potential typical of the appellation in well-balanced vintages. Top single-vineyard sites like Pianrosso particularly benefited from the vintage's structured profile.

About Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona farms a historic estate at the southern end of the Brunello appellation, where the Pianrosso vineyard sits on rocky, well-drained soils. The Pianrosso bottling is produced only in selected vintages from 100% Sangiovese and represents one of the appellation's most respected single-vineyard expressions.

From the cellar: pair with

Slow-braised oxtail with tomato and herbs

Long-cooked beef and tomato meet the wine's savory acidity head-on, while the gentle gaminess aligns with the dried-herb notes.

Wild boar pappardelle

The classic Tuscan pairing: gamey ragù mirrors the wine's secondary leather and earth, and the pasta's richness softens the firm tannins.

Aged Pecorino Toscano with chestnut honey

The cheese's saline depth and the honey's earthiness echo the wine's Mediterranean character.

Frequently Asked

Is 2012 Pianrosso Brunello ready to drink?

Yes. The wine entered its peak window in 2024 and is showing beautifully in 2026 with proper decanting. It will continue to drink well through approximately 2033.

How long will 2012 Pianrosso age?

A structured Brunello from a good vintage like 2012 will hold its peak through approximately 2033 with graceful decline through 2037. Top single-vineyard Brunello can age longer in cooler cellars.

Should I decant 2012 Pianrosso?

Yes. 60-90 minutes in a decanter brings out the secondary complexity. The wine is fully approachable but rewards the air.

What makes single-vineyard Brunello different?

Single-vineyard Brunello (like Pianrosso) is bottled separately from the estate's broader Brunello to express the specific terroir of one site. These bottlings typically show greater concentration, structure, and aging potential than the standard Annata.
