Approaching Peak: drinkable, but best years are ahead.

In 2026 the wine is just entering its drinking window but remains in a primary phase. The 2020 vintage's generous fruit is well-defined, but the tannins are firm and the secondary complexity hasn't yet developed. Decant 90 minutes to 2 hours for best current expression. Better to wait; peak begins in 2030.

The 20 Corton Le Clos du Roi.

A Grand Cru Burgundy from one of Aloxe-Corton's most historic sites: structured, mineral, and built for decades.

Tasting note

Translucent ruby with a deep core. The nose lifts with black cherry, raspberry, and a distinct spice-and-mineral edge that signals Corton terroir. Notes of warm earth and sweet pipe tobacco build with air. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins (6/10) and bright acidity (6/10) that keeps the wine vertical. Black fruit, plum, and a savory mineral undertow run through the mid-palate. The finish is long, structured, and finishes on a note of crushed stone.

The 2020 vintage

2020 in Burgundy was a warm vintage that produced wines with generous fruit and supple texture, though top sites with cooler aspects retained acidity and structure. The Corton hill, with its mix of exposures and elevations, particularly benefited from the year's combination of ripeness and freshness.

From the cellar: pair with

Duck breast with cherry sauce

Duck's richness and the cherry's sweet-tart edge align with the wine's red fruit; the gentle gaminess echoes the wine's earth and tobacco notes.

Coq au vin

The classic Burgundian pairing: chicken in red wine echoes the wine's own structure and brings out the savory mineral edge.

Wild mushroom tart with thyme

Earthy mushrooms align with the wine's mineral and herbal notes; the buttery tart cushions the firm tannins.

Frequently Asked

Is 2020 Pousse d'Or Corton ready to drink?

Just barely. The drinking window opened in 2025 but the wine is still in a primary phase with firm tannins. True peak expression begins in 2030 and runs through 2042.

How long will this Corton age?

Grand Cru Burgundy from a structured estate like Pousse d'Or routinely ages 22-30 years. Expect peak between 2030 and 2042, with graceful decline through 2050.

Should I decant Corton?

Yes. 90 minutes to 2 hours in 2026. Burgundy generally benefits from less decanting than Bordeaux, but a young Grand Cru like this one needs air to begin showing its complexity.

What makes Corton special among Burgundy Grand Crus?

Corton is the only red Grand Cru on the Côte de Beaune and one of the largest Grand Cru appellations in Burgundy. Wines from Le Clos du Roi, on the southeastern slope of the Corton hill, are typically among the most structured and age-worthy expressions of the appellation.
