Where it is, June 2026

At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2010-2032).

In 2026 this 2005 Musigny is firmly mid-peak and fully mature. The window opened in 2008, with a long peak running 2010 to 2032, so at 21 years from vintage you are squarely inside the plateau with several plateau years still to come before the hard decline near 2041. Expect a wine that has shed its youthful firmness: the tannins have resolved into silk, the red fruit has gained sweetness and depth, and tertiary forest-floor and earthy notes are now woven through. There is no rush to drink, but no reason to wait for more development either. Open it now or hold with confidence through the next decade.

The 05 Musigny Grand Cru.

Tasting note

Elegant and powerful at once, this Musigny leads with wild strawberry and red cherry lifted by a savory undercurrent of earthy forest floor. Biodynamic farming shows in the purity of fruit expression, where every note feels clean and transparent rather than worked. On the palate the structure is classic Chambolle refinement: tannins sit at a moderate 5 and have softened into a silky, almost weightless grip, while the bright acidity at 7 keeps the fruit vivid and the finish long and energetic. The body is medium at 6, poised rather than heavy, letting the perfume and the remarkable length on the finish carry the wine. Mature tertiary tones of underbrush and damp earth now frame the red fruit, the hallmark of a great Cote de Nuits Pinot Noir at full maturity. Detailed, layered, and persistent, this is the silky, perfumed side of grand cru Burgundy.

The 2005 vintage

2005 is widely regarded as one of the great red Burgundy vintages, and the Cote de Nuits was its epicenter. A warm early summer, a cool and notably dry August, and a touch of well-timed September rain gave slow, even maturation: ripe sugars and ripe tannins without dilution, and acidity fully preserved. Yields were healthy and the fruit came in clean, a hands-off vintage that needed little intervention. The result is ripe and dense yet pure and balanced, with high but supple, luscious tannins rather than dry ones. It is a sensational, age-worthy vintage ranking among the finest of its era.

About Domaine de la Vougeraie

Domaine de la Vougeraie farms biodynamically across the Cote d'Or and is one of the driving forces for biodynamics in Burgundy. Its Musigny comes from a tiny grand cru holding of roughly 0.21 hectare, fermented whole-bunch in the house style that prizes transparency of terroir and purity of fruit. That approach gives a Musigny built on silky texture and aromatic lift rather than weight, letting the grand cru's refinement speak clearly.

From the cellar: pair with

Roast squab with mushroom jus

The wine's moderate tannin (5) is gentle enough for tender game bird, while the earthy forest-floor character mirrors the mushroom jus and the medium body (6) matches without overpowering the dish.

Coq au vin

Bright acidity (7) cuts the richness of the braise and refreshes the palate, and the medium body (6) sits in harmony with the dish rather than dominating, letting the red fruit echo the wine-based sauce.

Seared salmon with pinot noir reduction

Silky, moderate tannins (5) will not clash with oily fish, the lively acidity (7) keeps the pairing fresh, and the medium body (6) meets the salmon's weight for a balanced, classic Burgundian match.

Service & cellaring

Serving Temp
60-64F (16-18C)
Decanting
Decant 45 to 60 minutes before serving. At 21 years this Musigny is mature and may carry light sediment, so pour gently off the bottom; a short decant lifts the forest-floor and red-fruit aromatics without blowing off the delicate perfume that defines the wine.
Cellar Storage
55F (13C), 60-70% humidity, bottle on its side.

The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked

When should I drink this 2005 Musigny Grand Cru?

Drink it now. In 2026 it is mid-peak and fully mature, sitting inside a peak window that runs from 2010 to 2032. You can enjoy it today or hold with confidence for several more plateau years before the gradual decline that sets in toward 2041.

Should I decant this wine?

Yes, give it a gentle 45 to 60 minute decant. After 21 years it is likely to have some sediment, so pour carefully off the bottom. A short decant opens the red-fruit and forest-floor aromatics while preserving the delicate perfume that makes this Musigny special.

What food pairs best with this Musigny?

Lean toward elegant, earthy dishes that respect its medium body and silky tannins: roast squab with mushroom jus, coq au vin, or seared salmon with a pinot noir reduction. The wine's bright acidity also makes it a friend to richer, slow-braised preparations.

Can I keep cellaring this, or should I hold?

You can hold. Stored at 55F with 60 to 70 percent humidity and the bottle on its side, this 2005 has the structure and acidity to stay on its plateau through the early 2030s. There is no urgency to drink, though it is already showing beautifully right now.
