At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2024-2030).
In 2026, the 2017 Lamarche La Grande Rue is at its peak, precisely where the drinking window and terroir converge most beautifully. The peak runs from 2024 through 2030 - a window that rewards drinking now rather than holding. This is not a wine for extended cellaring beyond 2030: the 2017 vintage's naturally lighter concentration and earlier-maturing profile mean the plateau is not wide. In 2026, however, the wine delivers everything La Grande Rue promises: the haunting iron and chalk of the terroir between La Tache and Romanee-Conti expressed with floral elegance, resolved tannins, and a savory mineral finish. Open your bottles with confidence and intention over the next four years.

The ‘17 La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole.
La Grande Rue monopole at its peak: the 2017 Lamarche channels the grand cru's extraordinary terroir - between La Tache and Romanee-Conti - into a wine of floral precision and iron-mineral elegance.

Tasting note
The 2017 Lamarche La Grande Rue is captivating in its vertical, precise way: ruby-red with a developing brick rim, the nose showing dried cherry, red plum, tobacco, dried rose, and a compelling mineral note of iron and chalk that immediately signals the grand cru's extraordinary terroir between La Tache and Romanee-Conti. The palate has the elegance characteristic of the 2017 vintage - medium-bodied, silky, with genuine mid-palate richness and a savory finish of remarkable persistence. There is no excess here. The tannins are fully resolved and the acidity is graceful. A wine that reveals its singular terroir with uncommon directness.
The 2017 vintage
The 2017 Cote de Nuits was a recovery year following the frost-devastated 2016, providing a good crop of balanced, fresh, approachable wines - Wine Spectator rated the region a 94 (Outstanding) and described the wines as 'balanced, fresh and approachable, with purity; the best have the structure to age 20 years.' An early harvest following a warm summer preserved freshness without sacrificing aromatic complexity. For La Grande Rue, whose narrow monopole strip runs along the lower slope between La Tache to the west and Romanee-Conti to the north, the 2017 season produced a wine of earlier accessibility than this monopole typically delivers - a genuine gift for those who want to drink it now.
About Domaine Nicole Lamarche (François Lamarche)
Domaine Lamarche holds La Grande Rue as a 1.65-hectare monopole, one of the rarest and most coveted single-vineyard grand crus in Burgundy - a narrow strip of land running between La Tache to the west and Romanee-Conti to the east on the most coveted section of the Vosne-Romanee hillside. The family has farmed this site since 1933, and the cellar approach has been progressively refined: low proportions of new oak barrels, extended aging on fine lees, and gentle handling throughout to preserve the vineyard's singular iron-chalk mineral expression.
From the cellar: pair with
Roast guinea fowl with chanterelles
The 2017's fresh cherry character, fine-grained tannins, and floral fragrance are in perfect proportion with guinea fowl's lean richness and the chanterelles' earthy depth.
Côte de boeuf, rested and simply seasoned
The wine's vibrant acidity and iron-mineral finish provide the structure to balance a prime rib's fat content while the soft tannins integrate with the beef protein.
Aged Comté or Beaufort (24 months)
The wine's floral-mineral signature and bright acidity create contrast with the aged Alpine cheese's crystalline, nutty character - both are amplified.
Service & cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 60-64F (16-18C)
- Decanting
- Decant 1 to 1.5 hours before service. The 2017 is at peak maturity and benefits from gentle aeration. More than 2 hours risks losing the delicate floral fragrance. Serve at 62F to best express the iron-chalk mineral character.
- Cellar Storage
- 55F (13C), 60-70% humidity, horizontal storage away from light.
The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked
When should I drink the 2017 La Grande Rue from Lamarche?
The wine is at its peak right now in 2026 and delivering full pleasure. The peak window runs from 2024 through 2030. Do not hold past 2032 - the 2017's lighter concentration means the plateau is not wide and decline will set in gradually after 2030. Open your bottles over the next four years.
How should I decant it?
Decant 1 to 1.5 hours in a narrow decanter. The wine is at peak maturity and benefits from gentle aeration to open the floral and mineral aromatics. Avoid more than 2 hours, which can strip the wine's delicate rose and dried cherry fragrance. Serve at 62F.
What makes La Grande Rue unique among grand crus?
La Grande Rue is the only grand cru running directly between La Tache (DRC) and Romanee-Conti (DRC) on the Vosne-Romanee hillside. Its clay-limestone soils over iron-rich bedrock produce a mineral profile unlike any other site - iron and chalk rather than the pure velvet of its neighbors. The 1.65-hectare monopole means no other producer makes this wine.
What foods pair with this wine?
At its peak the 2017 suits elegant preparations: guinea fowl, pheasant, duck breast with fruit-based sauces, mushroom-forward dishes, and aged Alpine cheeses. The wine's iron-mineral character and fresh acidity suit restrained rather than heavy preparations. Avoid cassoulet or heavily spiced dishes that would overpower the floral precision.
Is there another vintage of La Grande Rue available to compare?
The 2023 Lamarche La Grande Rue is in the cellar and will be ready from 2031. It offers a much longer runway but is too young now. The 2017 is the vintage to drink today if you want the full La Grande Rue experience at its peak. Both are available in the Burgundy grand cru market.
