Peak 2012-2033

Where it is, June 2026

At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2012-2033).

In 2026 this 2009 Beaumonts is mid-peak and drinking beautifully, so open it with confidence rather than waiting. The window opened around 2010, and the wine settled into its long peak band running 2012 through 2033, where it sits comfortably today at seventeen years from vintage. There is no urgency: the acid line (7) keeps it lifted, and the silky old-vine tannins (5) have resolved into the kind of velvet texture that signals full maturity without any sign of fade. Hard decline is not projected until around 2042, so you have years of plateau ahead. Drink a bottle now to enjoy it at its most expressive, and hold the rest knowing they will reward patience through the early 2030s.

The 09 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts.

A warm, generous 2009 from Jayer's old Vosne vines, fully destemmed by Emmanuel Rouget. Velvet-textured, fresh, and squarely at peak in 2026.

Tasting note

Sight: a medium ruby that has softened toward garnet at the rim, bright and translucent in the glass, showing the gentle bricking of a seventeen-year-old Vosne. Nose: classic Vosne spice up front, wood smoke and warm earth, then wild black fruit, dried cherry, and a lift of violets. Palate: medium-bodied (6) and velvet-textured, the fruit ripe and generous in the warm 2009 register yet carried by excellent freshness, the acidity (7) keeping everything taut and detailed rather than plush. The tannins are modest in grip (5) but exceptionally fine, the silky refinement that 70-year-old vines lend, polished and seamless across the mid-palate. Finish: long and savory, spice and smoke trailing off over fresh red and black fruit, with real power held in balance by that freshness. A wine of both flesh and lift.

The 2009 vintage

2009 was a warm, sun-filled growing season in the Cote de Nuits: a hot spring brought early flowering, and after summer thunderstorms a heatwave from around August 10 ripened the fruit fully into a warm early September. The result is ripe, generous, charming reds, and the better premier crus retained freshness where lesser wines turned plush and early-drinking. This contrasts with the cooler, more austere 2008 next door. Wine Spectator rated the 2009 Cote de Nuits reds 95 and called the vintage Classic, with ripe, pure fruit, and a drink-or-hold verdict that this Beaumonts answers on the fresher, more structured side of the vintage.

About Emmanuel Rouget

Emmanuel Rouget farms the old Jayer family parcels in Vosne-Romanee, including this premier cru Les Beaumonts and the storied Cros Parantoux, as the nephew and protege of Henri Jayer. The house works in Jayer's tradition: fully destemmed fruit from very old vines, around 70 years here, which is exactly what gives this wine its silky tannin refinement and layered complexity. The style is generous but precise, fruit pushed by warmth yet framed by freshness.

From the cellar: pair with

Roast duck breast with a black-cherry and red-wine reduction

The medium body (6) matches duck without overwhelming it, the high acid (7) cuts the rendered fat and the sweet reduction, and the modest, silky tannins (5) stay polished against the tender meat rather than clashing.

Mushroom and thyme risotto

A vegetarian dish leans on the wine's wood-smoke and earthy Vosne spice; the brisk acidity (7) lifts the creamy rice, and the gentle tannins (5) and medium weight (6) keep the pairing graceful rather than heavy.

Roasted squab or quail with herbs

Delicate game birds need a red with restraint: the medium body (6) and refined low-to-moderate tannin (5) will not bury the bird, while the fresh acidity (7) frames its savory char and the wine's wild black fruit echoes the meat.

Service & cellaring

Serving Temp
60-64F (16-18C)
Decanting
In 2026, decant 45 to 60 minutes before serving. At seventeen years the wine is mature but still powerful, and a moderate decant lets the Vosne spice, smoke, and violet aromatics open while smoothing the fine tannins. Stand the bottle upright a day ahead and pour gently off any light sediment.
Cellar Storage
55F (13C), 60-70% humidity, bottle on its side.

The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked

When should I drink this 2009 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanee Les Beaumonts?

Now is an excellent time. In 2026 the wine is mid-peak, seventeen years from vintage, with resolved silky tannins and bright freshness. Its peak band runs 2012 to 2033, so you can drink it confidently today or hold.

How long should I decant it?

Decant 45 to 60 minutes before serving in 2026. The wine is mature but still powerful, and a moderate decant opens the spice, smoke, and violet aromatics while easing the fine tannins. Stand it upright a day ahead and pour off any sediment.

What should I pair with it?

Roast duck with a cherry reduction, a mushroom and thyme risotto, or roasted squab all work well. The wine's medium body, brisk acidity, and refined modest tannins favor poultry, game birds, and earthy, mushroom-forward dishes over heavy red meat.

Should I keep cellaring this wine or drink it now?

Both options are sound. At peak in 2026, it is delicious now, but with hard decline not projected until around 2042 and a peak band through 2033, well-stored bottles will hold and reward patience for years. There is no pressure to rush them.
