Drinking Window
In 2026: At PeakIn the heart of its drinking window (2022–2032).
Right now: In 2026, the wine is in the heart of its peak window and showing the hallmarks of mature Napa Cabernet at twelve years from vintage. The fruit has softened from its primary brashness: cassis, wild cherry, and incense lead the palate, with secondary notes of cigar, tobacco, and dark spice now well-integrated. Tannins are sweet and velvety, the oak fully resolved into the wine. Open it now with 30 to 45 minutes of decanting and you get a complete, generous glass. There is no urgency to hold; the wine is at the top of its arc and will continue showing well through the early 2030s.
Tasting Note
Garnet core with a pale, slowly receding rim, brilliant in the glass. The nose lifts with pure cassis, incense, and licorice, with wild cherry and subtle barrique adding depth. With air, smoke, tobacco, and dark spice emerge from the secondary aromatics. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied and notably integrated: sweet, velvety tannins that have polished cleanly, balanced acidity, and a long mid-palate carrying the dark fruit and savory spice forward together. The oak is well-integrated rather than dominant, and the finish is long, soft, and warm without being heavy. A Cabernet that demonstrates how Far Niente's house style ages: structure giving way to silk over a decade in the bottle.
The 2014 Vintage
2014 in Napa Valley and the Oakville sub-appellation specifically was rated 95 (Classic) by Wine Spectator and quality_tier exceptional for Oakville. Heavy rains in February and March gave the vines an early boost (though not enough to break the multi-year drought), and from there warm, dry conditions led to an early harvest. Quality was very consistent across the valley, with wines showing power and depth, as well as extra aromatic range. WS called it a beautiful vintage with a distinct signature. For Far Niente's Oakville bottling, the vintage delivered the structure for a long aging arc that has played out cleanly: critic scores in the low 90s on release (WA 91, Vinous 90) have been borne out by the way the wine has come together with twelve years of bottle age.
About Far Niente Winery
Far Niente was originally founded in 1880 and revived in 1979, making it one of Napa's great historic estates and a long-running benchmark producer of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Estate Bottled Oakville Cabernet is the flagship red: graceful, ageworthy wine in a classical, luxurious Napa style, drawn from the estate's 100-acre Oakville vineyard. The estate's 40,000 square feet of historic caves below the property hold a deep library of past vintages, and the label is a fixture in cellars that prize a reliable house style and a multi-decade aging track record.
Food Pairings
Slow-roasted prime rib with horseradish jus
The wine''s integrated tannins and dark spice meet the savory char of a roasted bone-in cut head-on, and the horseradish edge keeps the wine''s sweetness in check.
Braised short rib with porcini
Long-braised beef and mature Cabernet are an inevitable match; the wine''s tobacco and incense weave directly into the mushroom''s earthy depth.
Aged Stilton or Roquefort with toasted walnut bread
Salty, blue-veined cheese cuts the wine''s soft sweetness; the walnut bread echoes the oak-derived spice. A finish-the-bottle pairing rather than a dinner course.
