Drinking Window
In 2026: At PeakIn the heart of its drinking window (2025–2037).
Right now: In 2026, the wine sits right at the front edge of its peak window. The primary brashness has shed: cassis and black cherry remain the lead voices, but cigar box, cedar, and dried herbs have begun to layer in. Tannins are firm but no longer grippy, sweet and well-integrated. Open it now with 60 to 90 minutes of decanting and you get a complete glass; hold another three to five years and the secondary aromatics deepen further. There is no urgency, but no penalty for opening either.
Tasting Note
Deep ruby with a slowly receding garnet rim. The nose leads with mixed berry, light earth, and licorice, then layers of black currant, black cherry, and toasted oak emerge with air. A whisper of plum and sweet incense rounds out the aromatics. On the palate, the wine is muscular and concentrated: firm grainy tannins, fresh acidity, and a long mid-palate carrying cassis, dried herbs, cigar, and cedar. The oak is integrated rather than dominant. The finish is long with a savory, almost iron-like persistence and a final note of bittersweet chocolate. A Cabernet that prioritizes structure and length over up-front fruit, in keeping with Far Niente's house style.
About Far Niente
Far Niente was originally founded in 1880 and revived in 1979, making it one of Napa's great historic estates and a long-running benchmark producer of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Estate Bottled Oakville Cabernet is the flagship red: graceful, ageworthy wine in a classical, luxurious Napa style, drawn from the estate's 100-acre Oakville vineyard with a multi-decade track record. The estate's 40,000 square feet of historic caves below the property hold a deep library of past vintages, and the label remains a fixture in cellars that prize classic, luxurious Napa styling.
Food Pairings
Grilled rib-eye with peppercorn crust
The wine''s firm tannins and savory cigar-box notes are made for the Maillard char and black-pepper bite of a thick-cut steak.
Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary
Lamb''s gentle gaminess matches the wine''s earthy, dried-herb undertow, and the long-cooked richness softens the still-firm tannin.
Aged Manchego or Vermont cheddar
Nutty, crystalline aged cheese mirrors the wine''s oak-derived sweetness without overpowering its mineral spine.

Frequently Asked
Is 2017 Far Niente Estate Bottled Oakville Cabernet ready to drink?
Yes. The wine entered its peak window in 2025 and is showing well in 2026 with 60 to 90 minutes of decanting. Peak expression runs through approximately 2037, so there is no urgency to open it.
How long will 2017 Far Niente Estate Bottled age?
Far Niente''s Oakville Cabernet has a track record of aging 20 to 25 years from a structured vintage.
Was 2017 a good year for Napa Cabernet?
It was a controversial vintage. Wine Spectator rated it 92 (Outstanding) but flagged the Labor Day heat wave and the October wildfires that raised smoke-taint concerns. Producers who picked early or were upwind of the fires made structured, expressive wines. Far Niente''s Oakville bottling is one of those success stories.
Should I decant 2017 Far Niente?
Yes, 60 to 90 minutes in 2026. The tannins are firm and the secondary aromatics open noticeably with air. From about 2032 onward, 30 to 45 minutes is enough.
What is the ideal storage temperature for Far Niente Cabernet?
Constant 55°F (13°C) with 60 to 70% humidity, on its side, away from light and vibration. Steady temperature matters more than the exact number; avoid swings.
