Peak 2028-2038

Where it is, June 2026

Approaching Peak: drinkable, but best years are ahead.

In 2026, the wine has just entered its drinking window and is at the youthful end of its arc. The fruit is concentrated and primary: mixed berries, dark cherry, and graphite lead the palate, with toasted oak still visible as a frame rather than an integrated layer. Tannins are polished and fine-grained but firm. Open it now with 90 minutes of decanting and you get a complete glass, but the wine is built for cellaring. The textbook move is to hold to 2028 or beyond, when the secondary aromatics (mocha, dried herb, tobacco) begin to emerge and the oak fully resolves.

Far Niente's broader Napa Valley bottling from a difficult 2022 vintage. Critics rewarded what the estate pulled together: JS 96, Decanter 94.

Tasting note

Deep ruby with violet glints and a tight rim. The nose lifts with mixed berries, baking spice, dried lavender, and thyme on the front, opening with air to layered black tea, toasted oak, dark cherry, graphite, mocha, dried herbs, and potpourri. The palate is concentrated and structured: polished fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, lifted mid-palate carrying the dark berry core forward. The oak is well-managed but still visible at the wine's current age, in keeping with the 2026 drinking position. The finish is silky, long, and lifted, with the tannins resolving on a final note of cocoa and dried herb. A Cabernet that rewards holding over opening early.

The 2022 vintage

2022 was a difficult vintage in Napa Valley overall. A prolonged Labor Day heat wave knocked the life out of many sites still ripening, and Wine Spectator rated the broader Napa vintage 84 (Good) with a Drink-now recommendation. The story at the producer level was much more nuanced: estates with mountain or cool-pocket sites and the resources for very selective fruit and patient elevage produced wines that contradicted the headline rating. Far Niente's Napa Valley bottling is one of those: 96 points from James Suckling and 94 from Decanter for a structured, ageworthy wine that the estate's scale and cellar discipline made possible. A vintage where producer choice mattered far more than usual.

About Far Niente

Far Niente was originally founded in 1880 and revived in 1979, making it one of Napa's great historic estates and a long-running benchmark producer of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Napa Valley bottling sits one tier below the estate's flagship Oakville Cabernet, with broader sourcing across Far Niente's Napa holdings and a slightly earlier drinking window. The estate's 40,000 square feet of historic caves and a deep library of past vintages back the wine's aging trajectory, and the Far Niente label remains a fixture in collector cellars that prize classic, luxurious Napa styling with a reliable house signature.

From the cellar: pair with

Grilled rib-eye with peppercorn crust

The wine''s firm tannins and dark berry core meet the Maillard char and pepper bite of a thick steak; a younger Cabernet''s grip benefits from the fat.

Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary

Long-cooked lamb softens the still-firm tannins, and the herb crust echoes the wine''s dried lavender and thyme notes.

Mushroom and short rib cottage pie

Earthy mushroom, slow-braised beef, and Far Niente''s house style are an inevitable comfort match; the wine''s mocha and graphite notes laces directly into the depth of the dish.

Frequently Asked

Is 2022 Far Niente Napa Valley Cabernet ready to drink?

Technically yes, but it is not showing its best. In 2026 the wine is at the front edge of its window with firm tannins and oak still visible. It will enter peak around 2028 and hold beautifully through 2038. Better to hold.

How long will 2022 Far Niente Napa Valley age?

The Napa Valley bottling is built for medium-to-long cellaring rather than the multi-decade arc of the Estate Bottled Oakville sibling. Expect peak drinking 2028 to 2038, with a graceful decline through 2044.

Was 2022 a good Napa vintage?

It was a difficult vintage. A Labor Day heat wave compromised many sites, and Wine Spectator rated the regional vintage 84 (Good). Producers with the resources for very selective fruit and patient elevage made wines that contradicted the headline rating. Far Niente''s 2022 (JS 96, Decanter 94) is one of those success stories.

What is the difference between Far Niente Napa Valley and Far Niente Estate Bottled Oakville?

The Estate Bottled Oakville is the flagship: single-vineyard sourcing, longer aging arc, more structure. The Napa Valley bottling has broader sourcing across Far Niente''s holdings, drinks earlier, and is the more approachable sibling. Same house style, different positions on the aging curve.

Should I decant 2022 Far Niente Napa Valley?

Yes, 90 minutes in 2026 if you must open it now. By 2030, 60 minutes is sufficient. The wine is built for cellaring, so the longer you can hold the better the experience.
