Drinking Window
In 2026: Approaching PeakDrinkable, but best years are ahead. Peak begins 2030.
Right now: In 2026, the 2018 Futo 5500 is in its early drinking window, having opened in 2025, but is substantially more impressive as a cellar candidate than a dinner table selection right now. The wine's extraordinary structure — ripe, colossal tannins, full-to-dense body, and a concentration of incense, black cherry, and mineral character — is present and compelling, but the integration that will yield the full Futo experience won't arrive until the peak window opens around 2030. Over the decade from 2030 to 2046 this wine will provide some of the most complex drinking in the Stags Leap District. Collectors should hold.
Tasting Note
Opaque ruby-black at the core with a barely-there garnet edge. The nose is dramatic: crushed rocks, incense, and black cherry lead alongside spice, leather, and menthol, with stone, pine needle, and bark adding further aromatic dimension. Full-to-dense bodied on the palate with a statuesque architecture — the concentrated fruit and ripe, powerful tannins forming an imposing frame around a core of remarkable richness. Forest floor, light chocolate, and wet earth emerge on the very long finish. This wine carries both the class of the estate and the sheer physical intensity of the 2018 Napa vintage in a way that will reward another four-plus years of patient cellaring.
About Futo
Futo, founded by Annie and Craig Starn, is a small Stags Leap District estate whose name derives from the Japanese concept of unwavering commitment — an appropriate description of the estate's approach to winemaking. Located at 5500 feet of GPS elevation in the volcanic tuff soils of the Stags Leap palisades (the name "5500" references the estate's GPS coordinates, not altitude), the estate produces minute quantities of a single Cabernet Sauvignon designed for extraordinary longevity. Winemaker Celia Welch works with extended maceration and aging in primarily French oak to build a wine of structural ambition and aromatic complexity that few estates in the district approach.
Food Pairings
Dry-aged bone-in ribeye, 45-day aged, with compound butter and roasted marrow
The wine's massive tannin structure and concentrated fruit require maximum protein intensity and fat to meet it on equal terms — only properly aged, marbled beef approaches this level.
Braised short rib en croute with truffle-enriched jus
The wine's forest floor, leather, and mineral complexity align with truffle while the slow-braised collagen and fat of short rib absorbs the tannin without competing with the incense and black cherry.
Aged Manchego (aged 24 months) with Marcona almonds and dark cherry preserve
The crystalline fat and nutty complexity of aged Manchego amplifies the wine's leather and spice notes, while the cherry preserve bridges the wine's primary fruit to its saline-mineral finish.
Service & Cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 62-65°F (17-18°C)
- Decanting
- Until 2030, if you open a bottle, decant 3-4 hours. The wine's massive tannin structure and concentrated fruit need extended aeration to show its aromatics. From 2030 at peak, plan 2-3 hours in a wide-bottomed decanter. This wine will reward the investment of patience in both the cellar and the decanter.
- Cellar Storage
- 55°F (13°C), 65-70% humidity, bottle on its side in darkness.
Frequently Asked
When is the ideal time to drink the 2018 Futo 5500?
The peak window runs from 2030 through 2046, with the hard decline not projected until 2056. In 2026 the wine is technically open (window opened 2025) but is far better suited to the cellar than the table. Collectors should plan to hold through 2030 at minimum, opening a reference bottle now and assessing readiness against the 2028-2030 timeframe.
How does 2018 rank among Napa vintages?
Wine Spectator rated 2018 Napa at 99 points Classic — one of the highest scores ever awarded to a Napa vintage and matching the Left Bank Bordeaux score for that year. The vintage is broadly considered among the two or three greatest Napa has produced in the modern era, along with 2013 and 2007.
How much should I decant the 2018 Futo 5500?
Until 2030, plan 3-4 hours. The wine's massive structure needs extended aeration at this stage in its development. From 2030 at peak, 2-3 hours in a wide-bottomed decanter is the target. This is not a wine to pop and pour at any stage.
What food can stand up to a wine of this concentration?
Only the most protein-rich, fat-intensive preparations belong alongside this wine: 45-day dry-aged ribeye with bone marrow, braised short rib with truffle jus, or aged hard cheeses with substantial fat content. Under-matched foods will be overwhelmed by the wine's structural weight.
How long can the 2018 Futo 5500 age?
The hard decline threshold is projected at 2056 — three decades from now. This is one of the longest-lived wines produced in the Stags Leap District. Collectors who purchased multiple bottles should plan a staggered opening schedule spanning the entire 2030-2046 peak window.
