In 2026: Approaching Peak

Drinkable, but best years are ahead. Peak begins 2028.

2025PEAK 2028-20402048

Right now: In May 2026, the Quintarelli 2017 Valpolicella Classico Superiore has just moved into what can be described as its first genuine drinking window. Having opened in 2025, the wine is now showing primary fruit in good condition alongside the beginning of tertiary development. The red cherry and black pepper character of the Corvina blend is fresh and lively, and the chalky tannins have softened sufficiently to allow comfortable enjoyment without extended decanting. This is very much a wine in its ascending phase rather than at peak, with the projected window running to 2040, and opening a bottle now reveals an honest, expressive Valpolicella that rewards an hour of rest in the glass. The acidity remains vibrant and food-friendly, making this an excellent choice for the dinner table rather than the cellar at this stage.

Tasting Note

Giuseppe Quintarelli's 2017 Valpolicella Classico Superiore pours a clear, medium-depth ruby with a bright garnet core and a slightly translucent rim that reflects the estate's commitment to restraint over extraction. The nose opens with an immediately engaging bouquet: tart Marano valley red cherries lead, followed by black pepper, dried violet petals, graphite, and a characteristic Quintarelli herbal lift that sets his Valpolicella apart from richer, more commercial expressions. In the background, notes of sun-dried blackberry and a whisper of fermentation-driven earthiness add complexity without obscuring the wine's essential freshness. On the palate, the Corvina-Corvinone-Rondinella blend delivers structure and generosity in equal measure. Bright tingling acidity drives the mouthfeel from entry through the long midpalate, while firm, chalky tannins provide grip without roughness. The finish is balanced and surprisingly long for a wine in this category, cycling back through red cherry and black pepper with a clean, toasty mineral quality at the very end. This is Valpolicella as Quintarelli conceived it: not an Amarone substitute, but a serious wine in its own right with genuine aging potential.

About Giuseppe Quintarelli

Giuseppe Quintarelli was, until his passing in 2012, the undisputed master of Valpolicella and Amarone, and the estate he built in Negrar continues under the direction of his daughter Fiorenza and her family with the same obsessive commitment to quality. Quintarelli practiced extended aging, low intervention, and the use of indigenous grape varieties in ways that were considered eccentric during his lifetime but are now recognized as visionary. His Valpolicella Classico Superiore is not an entry-level wine but a serious, structured expression of the appellation from one of Italy's most revered estates, made with the same care as his legendary Amarone.

Frequently Asked

Is Quintarelli Valpolicella Superiore the same wine as his Amarone?

No. The Valpolicella Classico Superiore is made from fresh grapes rather than dried, using the ripasso technique, and is a distinct, lighter, more food-friendly wine than the Amarone. It is serious in its own right, with genuine aging potential, but at a different scale.

What grapes are in this wine?

The blend is based on Corvina and Corvinone with supporting Rondinella, the traditional Valpolicella varieties grown in the Classico hillside zone around Negrar.

Is the 2017 a good vintage for Quintarelli Valpolicella?

Yes. The warm, dry 2017 season produced richer, more structured wines than 2016 in the Valpolicella Classico zone, with good aging potential and concentrated flavor.

Can I drink this now?

Yes, it is in its drinking window and showing well with an hour of rest in the glass. Peak is projected to 2040, so further cellaring will reward patience with additional complexity.
