At Peak: in the heart of its drinking window (2021-2042).
In 2026, the Harlan Estate Red 2014 is five years into its peak drinking window, which extends through 2042. The wine is in its early-to-middle peak phase: enough bottle age for complexity to emerge, yet retaining the primary fruit energy that defines Harlan at its most powerful. The 2014 vintage concentration from drought stress is fully evident, but the tannins have integrated sufficiently to make drinking now a rewarding experience rather than a structural exercise. Collectors have sixteen years of peak drinking ahead. Those who open in 2026 will find a wine that is powerful, precise, and just beginning to reveal its full range.

The ‘14 Red.
Five years into a twenty-one-year peak, this Harlan Estate delivers blackcurrant, graphite, and cigar box across a frame of extraordinary tannin density, one of the finest Napa Cabernets of the drought decade.

Tasting note
Deep, opaque ruby-purple with barely any rim variation. The nose is a commanding presence: blackcurrant, dark plum, and cassis drive the aromatic core, layered with cigar box, cedar, and graphite that are the hallmarks of Harlan Estate fruit. On the palate, the body is full and structured, with incredible tannin density that is already polished but still provides a long, age-worthy backbone. The freshness is remarkable for a wine of this concentration, with natural acidity lifting the dark fruit through a finish of extraordinary persistence. Dried herb, tobacco, and a final mineral note bring the finish to a close long after the wine leaves the glass.
The 2014 vintage
The 2014 Napa Valley vintage was one of the most unusual of the drought decade. A severe drought, already in its fourth year, dramatically reduced soil water reserves and vine canopy. The result was naturally concentrated, small-berry fruit with elevated phenolic maturity harvested in early-to-mid September, well ahead of the historical average. Wine Spectator praised 2014 as a vintage of remarkable freshness and concentration, crediting late-season cooling events that preserved acidity in what could have been an overripe year. Harlan Estate, which draws on older vines with deeper root systems capable of buffering drought stress, produced one of its most balanced wines of the decade, combining drought-year concentration with the precision that the estate elevation and aspect provide.
About Harlan Estate
Founded by Bill Harlan in 1984 and producing its first commercial vintage in 1990, Harlan Estate is one of the founding documents of the modern Napa Valley cult wine era. Winemaker Cory Empting continues the approach established by Bob Levy and Don Weaver: Bordeaux-style blending of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated estate fruit from the western benchlands of Oakville, aged in French oak for approximately 26 months. Production is fewer than 2,500 cases annually, distributed entirely by mailing list to members who waited years for access. The wine has earned 100-point scores from multiple critics across multiple decades and stands among the handful of wines that define what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is capable of producing.
From the cellar: pair with
Prime Filet Mignon with Bone Marrow and Black Truffle
Harlan extraordinary tannin density and dark fruit richness find their ideal foil in the fat-marbled richness of prime beef, while bone marrow amplifies the cedar and graphite notes and black truffle echoes the earthy depth.
Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb with Cassis Reduction
The cassis reduction mirrors the wine primary fruit character, while the lamb richness and herbal crust engage the tannin structure and cedar and tobacco notes in the mid-palate.
Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano with Dark Chocolate
The aged cheese crystalline umami and the dark chocolate bitterness are classic calibrations for Napa Cabernet tannin structure, lifting the wine fruit forward and extending the finish without overshadowing it.
Service & cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 62-65F (17-18C)
- Decanting
- Decant 90 minutes to two hours in 2026. The Harlan 2014 density and tannin structure are significant even at five years into its peak, and this wine genuinely benefits from extended aeration. A two-hour decant in a large, wide-bottomed decanter softens the tannins and allows the wine full aromatic range, from the primary blackcurrant core to the cedary secondary notes, to unfold completely. If serving at a dinner, decant at least two hours before guests are seated.
- Cellar Storage
- 55F (13C), 60-65% humidity, bottle on its side.
The drinking window on this bottle is calculated with the Cellared Ageability Index (CAI) v1.0, a 10-factor model. Try the free drinking window calculator on any wine, or read when to drink wine for the practical signals.

Frequently Asked
When is the best time to drink the 2014 Harlan Estate Red?
The wine is now in its early peak in 2026, having entered the peak window in 2021. Drinking now rewards with power, precision, and emerging complexity. The window extends through 2042, meaning the best drinking is arguably still ahead for patient collectors: the 2030s will likely show this wine at its most complex and integrated. But there is nothing to lose by opening a bottle today with proper decanting.
How does the 2014 Harlan compare to other Harlan vintages from the 2010s?
The 2014 stands out for its combination of drought-year concentration and remarkable freshness, a balance that distinguishes it from the riper 2012 and 2013. The 2016, 2018, and 2019 vintages are often cited as the decade finest from Harlan, but the 2014 offers a uniquely precise expression from the drought conditions. It is less immediately opulent than 2013 but likely more age-worthy over the full horizon.
How does one get access to Harlan Estate?
The Harlan Estate mailing list is essentially closed; new members typically wait years to gain access. The secondary market at auction platforms like Hart Davis Hart, Acker Merrall, and Zachys is the primary access point for most collectors. Prices on the secondary market reflect demand that consistently exceeds supply, with the 2014 regularly trading at a significant premium to release price.
What grape varieties make up the Harlan Estate Red blend?
The Harlan Estate Red is a Bordeaux-style blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, typically around 75 to 85 percent, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot making up the balance. The exact blend varies by vintage based on what the estate blocks express that year, but Cabernet Sauvignon primacy ensures the wine dark fruit, graphite, and tannin structure remain consistent hallmarks.
