Approaching Peak: drinkable, but best years are ahead.

In 2026, the 2017 Ovid Napa Red is approaching its prime. The drinking window opened in 2022 and peak starts in 2027. Nine years in, what was once brooding and tight now shows mulberry, cassis, and dark spice with increasing openness. Drink it now with extended decanting or hold through 2027 for fuller integration. Peak drinking runs through 2040.

Tasting note

The 2017 Ovid Napa Valley Red is rich and luxuriant, shaped by a challenging and eventful growing season. Brooding notes of mulberry, cassis, anise, bay leaf, and blackberry are underpinned by licorice. The palate is full-bodied and intense, with Cabernet Franc adding spice and aromatic lift to the Cabernet Sauvignon core. Tannins are firm and structured, carrying the wine's considerable length. The Pritchard Hill elevation is evident in the wine's focus and mineral precision.

The 2017 vintage

The 2017 Napa Valley vintage (WS 92, Outstanding) was defined by contrast: the winter drought finally broke, bringing vigorous vine growth, but the season turned wickedly hot in early September with no cooling-off period. Wildfires raged in early October, making 2017 Napa's most difficult and eventful season in recent memory. Ovid's producer notes describe the vintage as shaped by winter rain, May hail, and harvest before the fires. Producers who finished picking before the fire events made rich, concentrated wines; Ovid's early harvest decision shows in the wine's clean, expressive character.

About Ovid

Ovid is a small Pritchard Hill estate focused on site-driven Napa Cabernet and red blends. The winery takes its name from the Roman poet of transformation, a nod to the wine's evolution in bottle. Tiny production, high-elevation farming on rocky volcanic soils, and a Cabernet Sauvignon-led program with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot have earned Ovid a following among collectors seeking Napa wines with intellectual depth and distinctive mountain character.

From the cellar: pair with

Braised short rib with bone marrow gremolata

The wine's brooding dark fruit and firm structure match the richness of braised beef, while the acidity cuts through the fat cleanly.

Lamb loin with rosemary and black garlic

Herbs, black fruit, and bay leaf in the wine echo the aromatics of the lamb preparation, and the tannin structure handles the protein well.

Aged cheddar with quince paste

The wine's intensity and mineral depth hold up against bold aged cheese, and the fruit sweetness bridges the quince.
