Too Young: holding.

In 2026 this is still a baby. The drinking window doesn't open until 2029. The tannins are firm and the wine is closed, with the dark fruit dominating and the structural elements not yet integrated. Lay it down. If you must open one early, decant for 3+ hours and pair with substantial protein.

The 23 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

An organically farmed Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the appellation's oldest continuously farmed estates, built for long aging.

Tasting note

Deep ruby-purple, opaque core. The nose leads with brambleberry, black cherry, and cassis layered over notes of tobacco, licorice, and warm earth. The palate is full-bodied with firm, gripping tannins (7/10) framing flavors of dark plum, mulberry, and a savory, almost herbal undertone. Acidity is bright and keeps the wine vertical despite its concentration. The finish is long, with the tannins still asserting themselves over the fruit, a clear signal of the aging arc ahead.

The 2023 vintage

2023 in Saint-Émilion produced wines of firm structure and good aging potential, typical of the Right Bank in classically balanced years. Wines from the appellation in this vintage band generally call for at least 5-7 years of cellaring before approachability.

About Château Coutet

Château Coutet has been farmed by the same family in Saint-Émilion for generations and is one of the appellation's oldest continuously cultivated estates. The estate practices organic viticulture and produces a Right Bank blend dominated by Merlot with significant Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

From the cellar: pair with

Slow-roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic

The Right Bank's plush fruit and the lamb's richness cushion each other, while the firm tannins cut through the fat.

Duck breast with cherry reduction

Duck's gaminess aligns with the wine's tobacco and licorice notes, and the cherry sauce mirrors the dark fruit.

Aged Comté with toasted walnut bread

The cheese's nutty depth softens the still-young tannins and brings the wine's earthier secondary notes forward.

Frequently Asked

Is 2023 Château Coutet Saint-Émilion ready to drink?

No. The wine is in its primary phase with firm, unintegrated tannins. The drinking window opens in 2029 and peak expression runs from 2030 through 2042.

How long will 2023 Château Coutet age?

A structured Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from 2023 has the architecture for 20-25 years of cellaring. Expect peak between 2030 and 2042, with graceful decline through 2048.

Should I decant 2023 Coutet now?

If you must open one in 2026, decant for at least 3 hours. The wine is tightly wound and needs significant air to begin showing. By 2030, 90 minutes will be enough.

What is the ideal storage for a young Right Bank Bordeaux?

Constant 55°F (13°C), 60-70% humidity, on its side. For a wine with a 20+ year aging horizon, a passive or climate-controlled cellar is strongly recommended over a standard wine fridge.
