Too Young: holding.
In May 2026 the 2023 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Red is well inside its pre-peak phase, with the drinking window not opening until 2028 at the earliest and peak expression anticipated between 2032 and 2042. The grainy tannins remain prominent and the dark fruit is concentrated but still somewhat primary, with the secondary savory and mineral complexity that defines mature Pessac-Leognan only beginning to emerge at the edges. Opening a bottle now requires a very patient two-to-three-hour decant and should be viewed as an exercise in curiosity rather than optimal enjoyment. The wine's architecture is sound and the cellaring trajectory looks excellent. Those who hold bottles through the early 2030s will encounter a wine that has developed the tertiary depth that makes aged Bordeaux so compelling.

Tasting note
The 2023 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Red from Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte presents in a deep, brooding ruby-black color with serious presence in the glass. The nose is immediately evocative of Pessac-Leognan's signature gravel and mineral terroir: blackcurrant and blackberry lead with intensity, followed by violet and a crushed-rock mineralite that is the appellation's calling card. Pencil shavings and graphite weave through the fruit, and sage and licorice add an herbal savory dimension. A thread of smoke and savory accents grounds the aromatic profile and signals the firm structure below. On the palate the wine is structured and dark-fruited, with firm, grainy tannins providing the backbone for a deep concentration of fruit. The mid-palate is serious and tightly wound, with a saline lift that sharpens the line into a long, chalky finish. This is unambiguously a wine that requires cellaring. The raw material is impressive but the integration is still years away, and patience is not optional for those seeking the full expression of what this wine can become.
The 2023 vintage
The 2023 vintage in Pessac-Leognan and the Graves region benefited from an unusually wet winter and spring that replenished water reserves depleted by the dry conditions of 2022. The summer was warm and generally dry after the wet start, and careful canopy management allowed estates to retain freshness in the fruit. Harvest conditions were favorable and winemakers described a vintage of good concentration with better natural acidity than 2022. The resulting wines show the telltale Pessac-Leognan mineral and gravel character with excellent structural backbone for long-term aging. Critical reception of the 2023 Graves-Pessac vintage has been very positive.
About Château Smith Haut Lafitte
Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the most dynamically run estates in Pessac-Leognan, owned by the Cathiard family since 1990 and transformed into a benchmark property over the following decades. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic and has become as famous for the Les Sources de Caudalie spa resort on its grounds as for its wines. Le Petit Haut Lafitte is the estate's second wine, produced from parcels that do not make the grand vin selection. It delivers the Smith Haut Lafitte house style of mineral precision and dark fruit intensity at a more accessible price point.
From the cellar: pair with
Roast leg of lamb with herbs de Provence
The herbal sage and savory notes in the wine mirror the Provencal herbs, and the firm tannins integrate with the mineral richness of well-roasted lamb.
Steak au poivre with green peppercorn sauce
The blackcurrant fruit and saline lift in the wine cut through the richness of a cream-based peppercorn sauce while amplifying the wine's own pepper and spice notes.
Aged Ossau-Iraty with quince paste
The chalky finish and dark fruit concentration find a complementary partner in this Basque cheese, with the quince paste adding sweetness that softens the firm tannins.
Service & cellaring
- Serving Temp
- 17-18C / 63-64F
- Decanting
- If opening now, decant for a minimum of two to three hours. The tannin structure is formidable and the wine needs extended air exposure to show anything close to its potential. Waiting until 2028 or later is the stronger recommendation.
- Cellar Storage
- 12-14C / 54-57F

When is the best time to drink the 2023?
